Tennis Sophomore Year - Gabby Canzoniero
In the fall season, I play tennis for the school. It's super fun, and everyone on the team gets along really well. The only not so great part about playing tennis is that it always seems to be forgotten. For example, last year we ordered new uniforms, and they never came. Another thing was that our apparel order from last year didn't come until the second-to-last game of the season and our season was longer than it was supposed to be.
This year, we actually got uniforms, but they're completely different than what we asked for. It's a dark blue shirt with "Sparta" in white letters and a dark blue skirt. The uniforms look more like a youth cheer uniform than a tennis uniform. It's also annoying because we requested a white shirt with a light blue skirt, and we got neither of those things. Because we don't like our uniforms, everyone bought a white skirt and now we wear that with the blue shirt, which makes the uniform slightly better.
Tennis matches or just tennis, in general, seems to never be mentioned whether it comes to assemblies or the Sparta Scoop. Even on the rare occasion when an article was written on the tennis team the names, grades, and positions were always messed up, which is pretty frustrating. This is especially frustrating because every other sport seems to get proper recognition.
This year will hopefully be good though because we have a relatively young team, which means almost all of our players will be back next year. There is still some confusion going on, though, with positions, but it is mostly sorted out which is good. I play doubles, and I'm playing with a different doubles partner than I did last year, so it will be interesting to see how it all works out- hopefully for the better!
Despite all of this, everyone- including me- on the team loves the sport even with everything that goes with it!

Wow, I did not realize how little the tennis team was mentioned (which I guess is part of the problem). That does sound really frustrating!
ReplyDeleteThat's terrible that the administration doesn't pay a lot of attention to the tennis team! It must be frustrating having to deal with playing while also having to deal with the technicalities of the team. I'm sure you'll play great, though, and I wish you good luck this year.
ReplyDeleteYou make a really great point here! Tennis should be acknowledged just as much as any other sport!
ReplyDeleteThis is soo true! It’s great that everyone on the team loves playing the sport, however it’s not so great that the team is not recognized for all of our hard work!
ReplyDeleteThat's so frustrating. But don't worry, I'll make a student section and cheer you on at your matches.
ReplyDeleteWell that stinks. I mean finally you got new uniforms and not only are they messed but they they look like a young cheerleader uniforms. And I do believe that tennis shroud be mentioned more in school because Sparta tennis is doing amazing. They are doing so much better than some of the other sports that are getting more publicity. Good luck with your future games!
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty frustrating, especially because the skirts are to big, and just don't fit right. Also the fact that they didn't even order enough smalls. And I wish we got more recognition especially considering we win a lot of our matches.
ReplyDeleteThat's awful that you all don't get the recognition that you deserve. Tennis should get the same amount of recognition as any other high school sport, since, just like any other school sport, it is representative of the high school. You guys should be noticed for your accomplishments. Hopefully you all will be recognized more from here on out.
