The Main Cause of Stress by Connor Ailara
Stress is defined as a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances. This state of mind is not uncommon in school. Between homework, tests, sports, and extracurricular activities it is understandable that students would feel this way. A Princeton Review article reports that stress leads to physical health problems as well as a poor balancing skills. Over half of students report being stressed according to princtonreview.com. The same survey shows that about 25% of students report their main source of stress to be homework. In addition, a Stanford researcher found that over two hours of homework a night has overall negative effects on the student. According to this article homework is the main cause of stress.
On the contrary I feel that my main source of stress is assessments. In the first month of school I have already had over ten assessments. Each time I had to go through the stress of preparation and then actually taking the test. On Friday September 27th I had to take three tests and write two essays. The essays were due on the same Friday and even though they were pretty much completed I still felt I had to look them over before turning them in. The day before I studied until eleven o'clock at night after getting home at seven. On this day I only really studied for two of the tests because I felt I was ready for the third. It is because of stress that two test can take me four hours to study for. If I had been ready for the tests in only two hours I will never know.

I agree that preparing for tests can be very stressful. But I feel like it would be less stressful if I did not have homework on the same night that I am preparing for a test. If studying was the only thing I had to do on any given night, I would fell less stressed than if I had to study and do homework.
ReplyDeleteThe part about assessments is very true. Its been only three weeks and I've already had a day with four tests.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your stance about assessments. In our school we are inundated with quizzes and testes week after week, which in reality is doing nothing but stressing us even more.
ReplyDeleteI disagree actually, I'd much rather study for a test for an hour than do homework for an hour. Also, homework is something that you have to do whereas studying is more of an optional thing. For me, homework is definitely the more stressful of the two.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I find that assessments are so much more stressful than homework. Not only do you have to make time to study, but you have to take the test and then anxiously wait for your grade. It's really hard knowing that a simple number can completely change your attitude. Whenever I get I bad grade, I start to dread that class. I find homework much more encouraging because it helps me grow confidence in the subject and take chances on some answers without fear of failure.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the part about assignments and the amount of tests that we sometimes have on the same day is unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you guys think we can do to alleviate this problem? Assessments are meant to tell us if the students are learning, but can we do it a better way?
