Area 51 Raid- Lauren Ambrosino
As most of you have probably heard, there was an out of this world event that took over social
media. The Area 51 raid! For those who have somehow managed to avoid social media for the
past 4 months, Area 51 is a highly classified US air force facility in Nevada that is rumored to
hold extraterrestrial life. The ‘raid’ was mentioned when a man named Matty Roberts made a
Facebook event called the Area 51 raid that was set for September 20th and planned to raid the
area to steal aliens. It was a joke, until 2 million people RSVP’d to join the raid. Little did he know,
his little event led to his house being searched by the FBI for a joke about attacking a military
facility. Social Media quickly did it’s thing and took over this idea by making TONS of memes
and completely changing the idea. Soon, it was planned to be an EDM filled music event with
alien images all around and would be held in a town near Area 51. This also fell out when the
town couldn’t provide all the amenities. But the town, Rachel, decided they would continue on
with the event and called it ‘Alienstock’. Numbers up to 30,000 showed and some say it wasn’t
a complete failure of an event!

Social Media continued to rage about the Area 51 and never ending memes and videos with
people taking home their pet alien after the raid. But this was all leading up until the actual day.
By September, the raid wasn’t really a topic of discussion on social media anymore, but some
people for sure did not forget! Around 3,000 people showed up that day to the gates of Area 51
and although they threatened to storm, no one did. Security guards at the scene said the crowd
was very manageable. They were allowed to go close but “couldn’t cross the line”. Although the
original Facebook event starter Roberts backed out, many followed through. Tents were brought
and people camped out on highways nearby where they enjoyed the sunny day and time with all
their other galaxy enthusiasts.

I can't belive 2 million people RSVPed even though it all started as a joke!! I love this blog and the memes make it 10x better!!
ReplyDeleteI still remember all of the memes I saw on Tik Tok and Instagram!! Also, I didn't know that 2 million people agreed to join the raid and that the FBI searched Matty Roberts' house!! That's crazy!! I wonder what would have happened if people actually stormed Area 51!
ReplyDeleteThe pet alien part is too funny!
ReplyDeleteStill sad I missed this event- but, seriously, when are people actually going to raid Area 51?! Nice post!
ReplyDeleteNice memes. I was so confused and curious what this was and why people were talking about this at first, but then it became funny. When I read something that said people had hotel rooms and were actually going there, I was concerned. The event was like a joke but some people were taking it seriously which was funny.
ReplyDeleteThat one guys comment sparked so many memes, its insane lol
