Blast from the Past: Barney - Sila Paniker

While looking through the news to find something to write about, I came across an article that caught my attention.

"Daniel Kaluuya to produce live-action Barney the Dinosaur movie"

His First Movie (1998)
At first, I only clicked because it made me laugh but then it made me think. What happened to Barney? He played a huge role in so many childhoods. Toddlers loved him. But then they grew up and went to elementary school. I distinctly remember the chants I'd hear (and probably participate in) on the playground. In those, Barney was portrayed as a scary purple monster. There were also rumors of Barney being arrested at one point. Then our unexplained hate for Barney was no longer relevant and we all forgot about him. So when I saw this article, I got curious.

First of all, it's being produced by Daniel Kaluuya, an actor who was in Black Panther and has been nominated for multiple awards. I didn't really understand why he was interested in bringing back Barney. I read the article and it included this quote, “We’re excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of ‘I love you, you love me’ can stand the test of time.” I don't know how many people consider Barney a hero so it was interesting to hear that. It reminded me of how we're finding modern day heroes for our unit assignments.

I wonder how this movie's going to do in theaters.  I know a lot of people were horrified when they heard about the live action Dora. Similar to Barney, Dora was a icon to many little children. I remember loving her and then all of a sudden, hating her like it signified growing up. I didn't get to see the new Dora movie but the ratings say it wasn't as bad as people expected. It has a 6.1/10 on IMDb and 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. I also don't know who's going to see this movie. Older generations are either going to see it to reminisce or avoid it so it doesn't ruin their fond memories. Maybe younger kids will see it because they have nothing to compare it to since they didn't grow up with him always on the TV.

Anyways, I'm curious to see how this works out. I wasn't expecting anything new from Barney and I don't think anyone else was either.  I'll be looking out for when this movie takes on the theaters to see how the people react to this revamped version of Barney.

  1. I probably should've told you this, but my agent and I are currently working out a deal for me to be cast as Barney. It's a multi-million dollar deal and trust me when I say these films will not disappoint. But seriously, this film is gonna be interesting. The old Barney made me LOL (laugh out loud).

  2. When Barney was first popular there were people who loved him and people who hated him. I'm curious to see if that happens again. I remember buying my cousin a Barney shirt because she loved him and she's 19 now. That's how long ago he was popular!
