NCAA could be paid in California. By Paxton

On September 30 a law was passed in California which will allow college athletes to be paid. Athletes will be allowed to get endorsement deals and hire agents. Governor Gavin Newsom signed the law knowing that he will create a huge fight with the NCAA, and he thinks he can win. Newsom's main point is that colleges are making over 14 billion dollars a year from college sports, but the athletes making the money get nothing. This is a big deal because it has been talked about for many years. One of the many problems with this only happening in California is that it might give California an advantage in recruiting. It would give athletes more incentive to go to a California college than another college. The NCAA wants to keep college athletics separate from professional sports. The only separation is that pro athletes get paid. I have talked about this in my English classes since 6th grade. Another reason people think it is bad is because I always thought that paying college athletes wasn't a bad idea, they make the money for colleges, so why don't they get any of it. I understand that college sports should be different than professional sports but if college athletes are being paid, what is the difference. This is a very big deal and I am wondering what will happen if the law is passed.

  1. This could be a game changer for all college athletes at D1 schools. I'm interested to see what happens too.

  2. This could actually help a bunch of people with college debt if they can get paid.

  3. This is going to become a very interesting argument because I understand why they don't want to pay them because they want to be different than the professional sports, but I also understand why they want to pay the athletes, since they are the ones raising the money for these colleges. If they pass the law want to see whether it will remain a law.
