Past to Present By: Olivia Ekeland

When I was only 4 years old
The only thing I cared about in the world
Was making sure my parents turned the car around
To go back to Florida so I could be reunited with my best friend
And role model, the legendary Mickey Mouse

When I was about to turn 8
The only thing racing through my mind
Was making sure that I would stay up past 9pm
To dance at the Pirate dress-up party that was on the Disney Cruise
And to spend that sacred time with my family

When I turned 9
The only thing I made sure of
Was making that year the best year
To ever exist because I knew that this was the last
And final year I was in my single-digits

When I was 11 years old
The only thing I wanted to do
Was make sure that I would be the first sibling
To hold my newest one, Sawyer
And to become his favorite sibling (I totally am, btw)

When I was 12
The only thing that kept me from sobbing
Was the fact that my cousin, Hayley is in a better place and
To be happy for her that she is no longer suffering
And to honor her 16 years on earth

When I was 13
The only thing I wanted to hold
Was my pop-pop’s hand when we found out he had cancer again and
To spend the last few months with him when he was suffering
And watch him never fail to put a smile on my face even on my darkest days

When I was 14
The only thing that kept me sane
Was the fact that summer was just around the corner and I get
To say goodbye to endless nights of mental breakdowns
And having no desire to go to school

Now that I am 15
The only thing I want to praise
Is God and the many blessings He’s showed me and
To wish y’all a Happy Thanksgiving
And to hopefully have a delay on Monday (at least)

It just goes to show how much our lives are different back then when we had no responsibilities and how youthful our hopes and dreams were. While I’ll miss those days, I’m actually kind of excited to see what God has planned for me and how my life will be like in the next 3-5 years. Anyhoo, happy Thanksgiving!
