The Radio's Road Trip by Colin Kowalski

Most families love road trips. The family time, the eating of food in the car, the story-telling, and, of course, the sing-alongs. Every family loves sing-alongs, but most of the time, they can never decide what song to sing! Every once in a while, I play a classic song, like "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond or "Yellow Submarine" by The Beatles, making the whole car erupt in lyrical harmony, but besides for that, the car ride usually results in fighting between family members over who has ultimate control over me.

The most powerful person in the car - the mother - usually has complete control over me. She usually listens to her favorite songs like Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper to relive her high school days, and is open to hearing suggestions from the little 9-year-old. However, whenever she goes to check her Facebook, the rights to the radio are up for grabs again, and each of the other family members has their eyes on the prize.

The 9-year-old, young and energetic, is always looking to get me to switch to his stations. He likes the new, pop songs by popular artists like Post Malone or Imagine Dragons. He has his specific stations, and only likes his stations. Although he is able to gain the sympathy of the mother (who has the most power over me), his songs are hated by the teenage brother, sister, and father, who are usually able to change the station.

The 12-year-old sister is going through her teen boy band obsession phase, insisting on listening to artist groups like the Jonas Brothers and Why Don't We. Her taste in music is also very unique, and the other members of the family really don't like it (Her attitude doesn't give her many brownie points either). The rest of the family despise the boy bands and their songs (due to the obsession of the bands by the sister), and usually switch the station again.

The 15-year-old teenage boy is obsessed with the latest rap music. He prefers the music by artists like Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Tecca, Drake, and other rap artists. Just like the sister, the older boy's taste in music is heavily disliked by the rest of the family, and the family usually insists on changing the station again.

Finally, there is the father's music taste. He prefers the "Pop-Rock" genre of music, or songs that provide a mix of pop and rock. Some of the bands that he likes are U2, Pearl Jam, Bon Jovi, and Bruce Springstein. The father listens to these bands, the bands that were popular when he was in college and is able to reminisce about that time. His music is generally liked by the group, and he usually gets to listen to his songs when the mother isn't there or there isn't a song on that she likes.

Throughout a road trip, there are very few times when one person has complete control over me. I like to call my self my own strong, independent radio.
Oh, wait, the mother's changing the station again.

  1. Cute perspective and I'm glad you realize that the Mom has the ultimate power!
