3 Things That Nick Can Probably Not Live Without- Nick Hwang

The new year has come, and people all around the U.S. are claiming, “new year, new me”, purchasing new gym memberships, just to go for the first few weeks and cancel the membership for the rest of the year. Others are maybe trying new diets, or maybe trying to deal with an addiction; everyone has their goals for the new year. Well, maybe everyone except me. Personally, I liked 2019, as it was one of my favorite years, and while others are trying new things for the new year, I am sitting back and doing most things the same way I had done last year, because last year I was happy. Here is a list of three things that made 2019 good, and will also be crucial for a good 2020.

1. My Phone: You may call me addicted or reliant, but I find my phone to be the most useful tool in my possession. If I am not sure of the answer to somebody’s question, I can simply search for the answer. If I am dealing with numbers that I do not want to work with in my head, I can simply open up the calculator app and find my answer. If I need to learn more about a particular subject, I can watch a youtube video on that subject. Or perhaps if I need some entertainment, I play a game or check my social media. There is just so much that you can do on your phone. However, after too much time on my phone I often get very bored and wind up doing something else.

2. My Bed and My Sleep: After a long, exhausting day of school or a draining day of wrestling, my bed is my hero, swooping in to save the day and relax me. It is remarkable how happy I feel the second I lay down in my bed to either take a nap or go to sleep, and as soon as I throw some blankets on top of myself, I’m out. When I was younger, I did not sleep as much, and I would always wake up around 5 o’clock in the morning, even when school did not start until about 8 o’clock. Nowadays, I feel like I am never getting enough sleep, so consequently, my toughest battle in the morning is fighting the urge to go back to bed. Oddly enough, on the weekends, when there is no school, I always wind up waking up early with no problem whatsoever.

3. Wrestling and exercise: It is a strong love/hate relationship that I share with wrestling. Simply put, I hate cutting weight, but I love the glory of winning a match. There is no better feeling in wrestling than getting your hand raised, because it proves a point to you, your opponent, and everyone who is watching. During wrestling season, I often find myself longing for the season to end, wanting to stop having to worry about making weight, or going to practice. However, as soon as my season has come to an end, and I have to put my shoes away for the year, I instantly feel like a part of me is lost. After the season I want to get back on the mat, I want to train again, and I want another shot at making it to the state level.

  1. I love my bed and feel like I'm always left wanting more sleeping and not wanting to get out of bed.

  3. I wake up 5:30 every week day. I crave the weekends because that's when I can sleep in. I also use an extra-thicker blanket, which I LOVE. An extra-heavier blanket most definitely helps me sleep better.

The latest I go to bed is 10:30 (week days). I do have a suggestion for when you wake up, considering the fact that you wake early and go to bed late. The first thing you should do is drink water. Everyday (although, I slack on weekends) drink water.I drink about 5 ounces and that helps reboots my system. Do drink more if needed. It just depends on your body. Second, eat breakfast. Whatever it may be, just eat, even if it's just pop tarts (I will admit, I eat too many pop tarts, lol). Third, drink more water. In all, that's like 10-20 minutes. I bet you won't feel as tired in the morning.

Also, I find it harder to wake up on weekends than during weekdays. Perhaps, it because I lack the sleep during the week so I feel the need to sleep more when I can. If you're having trouble waking up early, try thinking words of encouragement for the day or think of someone/something that motivates you basically just live. By no means am I an expert on sleep but these are just some trends I've found in my experience of about the last 2-3 years or so. Sorry that this is long.
