Scuba diving - Gabby Canzoniero
For my 16th birthday, my parents asked me if I wanted to do anything special to celebrate my "Sweet Sixteen". Instead of having a party like some people might, I asked to learn how to scuba dive. When my dad was younger, every year him and his family went to Grand Cayman and went scuba diving. I always heard about my aunt's, uncle's, dad's, and grandparent's stories about scuba diving, and ever since I was younger I always wanted to learn how. This year, I finally made that dream a reality.
When I first told my parents I wanted to learn how to scuba dive, they gave me 2 options of how to learn. I could either go to a class in Randolph, or I could take an online class. Naturally, I opted for taking the online class because I didn't want to go to Randolph every Sunday for 2 months. The online learning was a lot more work than I expected, there were 5 chapters and each chapter had a test at the end, and then there was a final test to see if I could be certified for scuba diving. Each chapter took me about 2 hours to complete and it wasn't super interesting, but I finished it all and I passed my final test.
Since my grandparents were avid scuba divers, they had lots of scuba gear that they don't use anymore since they stopped scuba diving about 5/10 years ago. Instead of getting some of my own scuba gear, I'm using my grandma's wetsuit and flippers. The rest of my scuba gear- my snorkel and mask- is mine, and it all matches really well which is good.
I'm doing my checkout dives, which are my first dives, in Grand Cayman, and I'm super excited. I'm going on 4 dives, and I can't wait for every one of them!
