Positive News By: Heather Holick

I search "news" or "current events" and all that comes up is pages and pages of articles about the corona virus. Almost all of it is negative, about death tolls or the number of cases increasing in our country. Which makes sense because news industries prosper on bad news, and stories that create fertile ground for improvement. However, I think its time we focus on some good things that are happening.

1. A mattress company, Avocado Mattress is using their facility to create masks to supply and help reduce exposure to covid-19.
2. The vacuum company, Dyson is now producing ventilators to help hospitals with their shortage of them.
3. With everyone staying inside air pollution and water pollution is declining significantly.
4. Music industries like iHeartRadio and other artists are hosting live concerts on TV and YouTube to raise money for charity and to keep people in lock down entertained.
5. University College London and Mercedes F1 have made a breathing aid that transports oxygen to the lungs reducing the need of ventilators.
6. A bride and groom donated 400 meals to hospital staff after their wedding reception got cancelled.
7. Kylie Jenner, Rihanna, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and Steph Curry have all donated over a million dollars either to hospitals or to get food to help the kids that rely on school lunches as their source of food.
8. Arianna Grande, Taylor Swift, and Brittany Spears all have donated money to struggling fans whose source of income has temporarily or permanently been put on hold because of covid-19.
9. In Copenhagen, residents worked out together from their baloney. Still maintaining social distancing but finding a way to be together and exercise.
10. An anonymous man bought all the flowers in a Massachusetts flower shop and distributed them to people in town right before the flower shop was forced to close due to covid-19.
11. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers signed up overnight to help NHS deliver foods/medicines to the people most at risk of obtaining the virus.
12. Medical shows such as Holby City and Casualty donated equipment from their studio to hospitals.
13. Several beer brand have begun making hand sanitizer to help with the shortage.
14. Gary Neville who owns a chain of hotels opened his hotels free of charge to NHS workers to stay at.
15. In Italy, neighbors are going out on their balcony together and singing and dancing. This is a safe way to communicate and have some fun.
16. In Spain, miles of people clapped from their windows to show thanks to healthcare workers.
17. Supermarkets are making special hours for elderly only, to try and help them stay safe from the virus.
18. Two little girls from Australia bought toilet paper and tissues and gave it out to the elderly in their neighborhood.

These are all examples of companies, organizations, and people around the world coming together during this crisis. Despite all the negative news, there is a lot of positive news that isn't being displayed enough. We need to be aware of the negative news so that we can take the correct precautions. However, we also need to realize that there is a good and bad to everything. All these examples listed above are people helping. They are making the best out the scenario we are in, just like we all should.

  1. I love this post because I want to spend more time trying to focus on the good that we're seeing in this very sad time. The generosity of people is wonderful and I love that musicians are giving online concerts and museums are doing virtual tours. A local farm near me is allowing families to drive through the farm and see the animals out the windows. So many people and little kids are loving it.
