School vs. Distance Learning- by Matt Byrnes

After spending around a month doing distance learning, I've formed an opinion on distance learning. Here, I will compare my thoughts about school and distance learning,

I've never really loved school but I never hated it. I've always viewed it as something I just have to get through and that's it. As a high schooler, the most annoying thing is the work that I get. The one thing that I appreciate school is how easy you can learn there. Everything is so organized. Because of the class periods and how long the school day is, I'm able to keep track of everything, spend a specific allotted time doing work for a certain class. The school environment also allows me to focus on my work. School also provides me with time for gym and orchestra. It's mandatory that I have to go to those classes because it's on my schedule. I love those classes because it's fun and easy and it gives me a break. Overall, school is just school. Nothing special but nothing drastically bad. Even though there are some things I dislike about it, like the work, it does grant me ways to get everything done and keeps me on schedule. I've been so used to this way of life since 6th grade when I had different teachers for everything.

So after around a month of distance learning, I've come to the conclusion that I don't like distance learning very much. I actually prefer school, like a lot more. I have two issues with distance learning. One, the work I'm getting is actually more than the amount of work I get from school. It's insane. After school, I would have days when I had a lot of work, but it was classwork. So by the time school ends, I'm tired, but I have very little homework, which is a notable difference compared to freshman year. With distance learning, I always start homework right away at 9am due to the amount I get. I'm spending hours on end doing work. I usually work from 9-5 which is, if I did my math correctly, 8 hours. With school, we work from about 7:30-2:24 which is around 7 hours. Two days ago, I got the most work ever. I worked from 9am-8pm. It just makes me very mad. This leads me to my second issue. One of the reasons why I'm getting so much work is due to the fact that I'm getting work from classes I never get work from like gym, Russian, and orchestra. It's very annoying with all of the videos, articles, google meets, assignments that those classes are giving me. I'm having to spend hours on just those classes. But there's one class that annoys me even though it's busywork. It's not hard or anything but I'm getting work from STEM(my engineering class). I would never get work for STEM because, in school, our curriculum is only really good for in-class. We can't really do much at home. However, I've been assigned 2 kind of big projects that go along with it. One, which I completed already, was a Rube Goldberg Project which took a very long time. Next is the one assignment I'm working on right now which is preparing for a certification test for Fusion 360. I love the class, but to me, the work is a lot. On top of this, I super scared for my AP test for biology on May 18th. The most work I get is from bio. Overall, distance learning is very very annoying and I hope we return as fast as possible.

  1. I'm sure many students are feeling the same way. I'm sorry that you're in this position because it is hard and not fair.
