Outer Banks Analysis - Cole Anderson

*If you haven't watched the show, I tried not to spoil anything but don't read if you don't want to know too much*

Over the course of the last 50 days, I have watched a good amount of television. By far, the best show I have watched has been Outer Banks on Netflix. This show is about teenagers living in the Outer Banks, North Carolina. This show highlights the differences in lifestyle between two social classes on the island, the pogues and the kooks. The pogues are meant to represent the lower class or more casual lifestyle, while the kooks are representative of the higher class. The main character is a 16 year old boy named John B, who has fun with his group of friends, Kiara, JJ, and Pope. I think that John B's constant search for his missing father is the drive for the story - without his hope and determination, there would be no story. The only reason that the kids had a mission all summer to look for long-lost treasure was because of John B. John B could not have done almost any of it without his friends, however. Their sense of adventure comes from all of them, however JJ gets them into a lot of risky situations, which Pope, Kiara, and John B often question. JJ's wild and reckless behavior stems from his past and his home-life. I think that the most important part of the show is the group's desire to carry out John B's father's life mission before he disappeared, but it couldn't have had the same effect without the relationship between kook and pogue. The tension between the "Kook Princess," Sarah Cameron and her boyfriend Topper, and everyone in John B's group of friends is what brings social drama into the show. All of these aspects of the show is what leads to the development of the adventure the kids face. What makes the show really interesting is the constant running from authority - at points it can be too dramatic and unnecessary, but it gives more drama and suspense to the plot. Overall, I think this show is very well produced and the plot is planned out well, but there are many aspects that could have been went about in a much easier and less dramatic way. I highly recommend watching this show on Netflix, but I don't recommend watching it all in one night like I did - I think it would be better to savor each episode.
