The Economy is Reopening? By Robby Cerra

     With the corona quartine surpassing mid-May, unemployment rates have skyrocketed, and many other workers are affected. In the course of just half a month, unemployment claims went from 200,000; to just under 7 million, in the U.S. alone, according to the US Employment and Training Administration. Furthermore, worldwide is not looking positive either, as 1.6 billion workers are expected to feel the aftermath of COVID-19, says the UN's International Labour Organization.
     Even though there is news of states reopening, massive economic supporters, like California and New York are on strict, statewide lockdown. In fact, out of the top 14 that make the most money for the country (GDP), 7 of which (New Jersey being one of them) are still on a statewide lockdown according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, and Business Insider. This hinders the countries overall economy by tenfold, further pressuring state governors to reopen hastily, which will no doubt raise infection rates if not done right.

Tan = Partially Opened
Red = State-wide lockdown
Blue = State Reopen

     What to expect: Although many statistics are proving the very opposite of promising, many states are reopening to partial capacity. What this means is that there are 4 phases of the reopening, and it is mandated that non-essential businesses have just 25% capacity of customers in the first phase, 50% capacity in the 2nd, 75% capacity in the third, and finally an entire reopen at 100% capacity. This multi-phased solution was coined by the Trump administration and many governors such as Governor Abbot of Texas have taken up the plan. Similar plans to open the country can be seen throughout, as the boardwalk in New Jersey is reopening up to the public, and the population of the boardwalk is expected to be closely monitored.

     The strict lockdowns are slowly unraveling and we should see some big changes coming mid-June, Stay Safe!

  1. This is a big problem for our country. I hope that we are able to reopen while still keeping everyone safe.
