Back to School (Tiktok Edition) By: Alexandra Gavioli
During the Summer of 2019, many teenagers were exposed to and downloaded the app called TikTok. I was one of the many that became suddenly addicted to the comedic videos, trendy dances, and songs. Although the app really changed my outlook on people, especially with outfits and personalities. The app had a way of making a stereotype for almost every person you know. In the videos new types of labels for teenagers, especially girls are ridiculed. These include but are not limited to the "vsco girl", "soft girl", "e-girl/boy" etc. Labels categorize teenagers and make them feel like they need to fit into a mold accepted by society. Juxtapose to these labels which most teenagers are running from.
The one that most people seem to be straying from is the "vsco girl" which is considered basic. Even though everyone wants to fit in, they also want to stand out. That is the the exact opposite of the vsco girl. Think "basic", scrunchies, big t-shirts, hydro flasks etc. The thing is that the connotation behind basic is bad. Which it doesn't have to be, people just make it that way. Basic isn't a bad thing it's just another way to express yourself. On the other hand the new bad connotation to the term makes everyone seem like maybe their style isn't good enough and they need to change.

I've noticed tik tok stereotypes being applied to people in real life after they became popular over this summer. A lot of people enjoy their style but don't want to be labeled and I completely agree with you. People should be able to dress how they want without people associating it with popular styles on tik tok to make them feel bad about themselves.
ReplyDeleteI keep hearing people talk about these trends and there are articles about VSCO girls floating around....I don't get it. Explain this to me! LOL
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I don't like to dress the same as everyone else, but I also don't really want to be labeled into a specific category. But at the same time I don't think anyone really cares what one another wears which is a good thing.
