Effects of a Positive Mental Attitude on the Student Populace -Jack Maraziti

Many kids, including teens, often second guess themselves either in school or on the sports field.  But what good comes out of that?  Recent studies prove that when people have a positive mental attitude toward a topic, it will increase the effectiveness of the brain and probability of success.

In 2018, Stanford School of Medicine conducted a study with 240 students ages seven to ten.  47 students were analyzed using an MRI while doing basic math.  The results were outstanding!  Students who had a positive attitude toward the subject of Math were found to have a more active hippocampus.  The hippocampus is a part of the brain responsible for memory and learning.  Lang Chen, leading author of the study stated, "...the unique contribution of positive attitude to math achievement is as large as the contribution from IQ."  This reveals that when students are have a positive attitude toward a subject in school, they are more likely to retain information from the class and are able to achieve a greater level of success.

In addition to scientific results, a positive mental attitude will also challenge a person to do their best because they are excited and want to participate in the task.  Whether as a student or an athlete, being challenged and practicing an activity are the most effective factors for improvement.  Furthermore, a positive mental attitude will create a sense of self-confidence that can increase performance.  For example, if there are only self-doubts such as, "I can't do this," or "I'm not good enough," then that will most likely be the outcome.  However, if those thoughts are filtered out or replaced with a positive attitude, the chance of succeeding at that task will increase.

Always having a positive outlook can enhance confidence and increase the amount of practice leading to an overall more successful and content life.  Next time you are taking a test, participating in a sport, or just doing an everyday activity, keep a positive mental attitude and watch the success flow.

  1. I agree that having positive mental attitude when going in to a class, especially when its a topic that you don't really excel at, is very important. It's good that you chose this topic because it speaks towards every student in our school.

  2. This is so true!!! I always find that when I'm in a positive mood in class I participate more and do better on tests, partially because I am paying more attention, and also because I'm more inclined to study. I think everyone should try to be more positive this school year!

  3. Dead on! As Mr. Slobozian says, "A positive metal atitude totally changes the ballgame." A positive mental attitude towards everything is so important, and you absolutely captured that here.

  4. This is a great post because it's really true! If you come into a class, sport, friendship, with a more positive attitude - you will go farther. When I taught middle school I had a bulletin board that said "Remember MOOMBA - My Only Obstacle May Be Attitude"

  5. I find this to be completely true. I always try to maintain a positive attitude, even if it is for something I do not particularly enjoy, because the outcome will usually always be better. It's crazy how something as simple as being optimistic can have a significant impact on performance and overall well being. Great Post!
