My Sophomore Year - Chris Byrnes

Sophomore year doesn't get any more difficult than Freshman year. In fact, it gets a lot more challenging. On a day one schedule, I begin my day with Honors English 10. I then go next door to the very rigorous yet rewarding class, AP Capstone Seminar. After that, I then proceed to Honors US I, my favorite class of the day. I then have a bit of a break as the last period before lunch is Honors Philharmonic Orchestra. When fifth period arrives, I'm off to gym class and then AP Biology for 6th period. I then work my way through the utterly crowded hallways of the high school to arrive at Honors Algebra II. I finally conclude my day, with Russian or Русский Язык as it's spelled in Russia. I basically conclude my day by looking at and talking about Putin - which isn't all that bad considering what else I could be learning. Although the school year has just begun, I am already experiencing the pressure with assessments during this first week of school and the following week. My goal is start off strong and build a firm foundation. I always try my best to start strong early on so I don't have to catch up later. I'm aiming for at least a 4.4 GPA when the marking period concludes. That's a difficult feat and very ambitious, however, fortunately, I read a book over the summer called How to Learn by Benedict Carey. This book has taught me hints and tips that I plan on employing. In fact, I've started utilizing them already for my upcoming bio quiz and history assessment. These hints and tools are proven by corroborated studies to actually improve student's scores. Despite my challenging classes, I do not fret one bit. In the long run, classes like AP Seminar, and Russian will benefit me and I'll look back, knowing it was worth the challenge.

  1. I understand your stress and the pressure. I feel just the same as you. It will get better in the next few weeks.

  2. Your classes seem interesting. I also experience the same pressure and stress that you explained, it is the most challenging part of school. The book you read seems helpful, you'll have to share some of those tips with me!

  3. It sounds like you have a pretty diverse schedule. How are you liking AP Capstone Seminar? It seems like a heavy workload but I've heard it covers some interesting content and it's really cool that you get the freedom to choose what you want to research.

    1. Yeah, AP Seminar is difficult. I spend hours trying to perfect my work in that class. The content is very interesting and we have open discussions between classmates. We basically run the class on days when we review the content. We're currently discussing education in America. We've analyzed articles, books, documentaries, photos, etc... I'd say its a combination of a English and History class (analysis wise). The work can be challenging at times and long, but it's worth. If you're not taking too many AP classes next year or Senior year, I'd recommend it.

  6. Good luck this year Chris and I want to know how your AP Seminar class goes this year because I was thinking about taking that class this year, but then I decided that I wouldn't and I would take class that are easier, but also beneficial for my education like Marketing. I hope you have a great school year and I hope that the methods that you learned from your book help you through this difficult year.

  7. I actually find that school has been much easier than last year as a freshman. My classes may seem harder, especially since I take AP Bio and I'm in STEM, however, I haven't been getting a lot of challenging work. I don't feel as stressed as last year. Freshman year was insane in terms of my academics in my opinion. I heard junior year is the hardest though.
