The Show Must Go On

-September 29th, 2019
BOOM BOOM CLAP. BOOM BOOM CLAP. BOOM BOOM CLAP. BOOM BOOM CLAP. The first sounds to erupt in the brand new turf football field. The first sounds that rose to our student section and the crowd's ears. The first sounds of an experience like no other. A rush of excitement and adrenaline swept through the stands. Partly, because of our so far dubs in the first football game, but also because of us. The school's marching band. Our show: The Show Must Go On became a quick hit throughout the stadium. It was as if a portal appeared and brought the school back to an 80's rock concert featuring the legendary, Queen. Fists pumping in the air, flashlights swaying left and right, hundreds of people singing their hearts out until their lungs couldn't provide enough air. An unforgettable night, all starting with two stomps, and a clap. Let me take you back to that night: Friday, September 13th, 2019.

Our opener, We Will Rock You was the first of six to be heard upon the crowd. In a speed faster than light, the crowd joined the color guard as we stomped and clapped to the beat. Soon enough, most people joined along forming one unified sound. The color guard's first dance of the show caught the student's attention, shooting cheers and screams up into the air. Moving along to our second song, Don't Stop Me Now, all at once the band and the vibrant flags all opened at the same exact time instantly spreading smiles across all of our faces until the end of the song. Third, the jazzy, Another One Bites The Dust portrayed our sassy spin to our show. Our energy shone through our dancers, gun line, and flag line. Love of My Life, a change of speed, and energy held a surprising event which I have personally never seen before. As I waited at the sideline, saber in hand counting my way through the sound ready to run onto the field at any moment I look up and to my surprise see the student section flashing their phone flashlight back at us. A pure, and heartwarming sight to see. Quickly, we transitioned into the hit everyone knows: Bohemian Rhapsody. This song grabbed our student's attention as they sang along leading into We Are The Champions; the end of our show. An experience I wanted to last forever I knew needed to end. We pushed our way through our hot and tiredness and belted our final sounds of the night receiving the most cheers and energy we've ever gotten, as we stood our last pose fist proudly raised in the air.

In the past, or at least since I've been here, (which has only been a year), Sparta hasn't been known for an excessive amount or even really a life-changing amount of school spirit. The marching band is definitely NOT the coolest group or team to be apart of. Who knows, it still might surely not give you the most "clout". However, the feeling, the satisfaction of victory, or performing in front of people who really are interested or care, is something truly more special than most team opportunities.

Now, the Sparta Marching Band places 1st in the division 2A out of 42 bands across the East Coast. We continue to grow and improve throughout the season and can't wait to see how far we go.

Sparta High, we ARE the champions.
