Things that never change- Brianna Patrickio
Being a Sophmore this year I have noticed that some things will never change. For one, they are enforcing the dress code, even more, this year which affects what everyone wears to school. I think the dress code for girls should be if your chest is covered then it doesn't matter if your shoulders are showing. One reasoning for the three-finger strap rule is because girls shoulders supposedly "distract guys" from doing their school work. But how did that become a girls problem to deal with? Why must girls change their style? A style which they are confident and comfortable in because the Sparta schools think that guys need help keeping their eyes on the smartboard.
Another thing I ws noticed is that they trust us less and less without phones even in my honors classes we are forced to put them in a phone pocket or something. Students are constantly told to act like adults and be mature and yet we are treated like children. when you are in an honors calss they claim to be teaching you to prepare for college but how can we prepare if we don't have control. When I am not being controlled and not restricted I feel more open to raise my hand and answer the question. Like many others, I use my phone to listen to music because it helps me focus but I can't do that unless I have my phone. So instead of restricting us right from the start let us use our phones until that privlate is taken away. The school has to remember not every student is a bad one.

ReplyDeleteI totally agree. Our school's dress code is absolutely ridiculous, especially for girls. I've also noticed the same thing in a few of my classes and find it rather exasperating (as I'm forgetful and have left my phone in some room or other more than once). You're right in that we're stuck in a contradiction where adults expect us to act mature, but then treat us like children. It's so frustrating.
ReplyDeleteOn a more positive note: I love your last sentence, it's super impactful!
It is has always been unfortunate that when some students don't follow the rules, the rest have to deal with changes that they may not deserve.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. The dress code is so unreasonable. I agree that we do need somewhat of a dress code but it doesn't need to so strict. Recently someone was dress coded because their skirt was too short. However the skirt was provided to the students by the school so how does that work?
ReplyDeleteI agree. What's annoying is that because of what only a few students have done in the past, everyone has to pay the consequence. Regarding the dress code, I could go on forever. Yes, maybe some rules should be in place because it can get out of hand, but how hard is it to tell a student to put on a sweatshirt if they need something a little more modest? It's not hard. Also, what the dress code is really doing, and I can't speak for everyone but doesn't it make you feel self-conscious and bad about yourself? Why should anyone have to question what they put on for school everyday. The dress code limits self expression and unnecessarily makes girls question themselves.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. The phone rule is annoying, I get not wanting students to be on them, but it would be so much better if we could just keep them in our backpacks. In my history class we have one of the phone pockets and above it it says "the Jake rule". So basically mainly one kid got us that rule. And about the dress code, it's just so annoying. The school is so cold we are usually all wearing sweatshirts anyways.
