20 New Moons Orbiting Saturn? By Lucy Partin

Back in 2004, Scott Shepherd an astronomer with the Carnegie Institution for Science started looking closer at planets such as Saturn. Taking a little more than a decade he successfully discovered 20 new moons orbiting Saturn. This brings Saturn's total moons to 82 surpassing Jupiter's total moons at 79. Using the Subaru telescope scientist can make out objects thousands of miles away. However, depending on the distance from Earth, it can only detect objects found in the deep depths of space that are all but invisible to the naked eye. For instance, the reason it took so long to announce the discovery of so many new moons around Saturn is that from a telescope the moons look like small shards of light circling the large planet. However, now we can accurately report that multiple new moons are surrounding Saturn.
Some moons orbiting Saturn take a very long time to finish an entire orbiting cycle which also explains why it took such a long time to accurately state that there are about 20 new moons. Also, a discovery has discovered that certain moons called retrograde orbit Saturn opposite of Saturn's rotation. However about two of the new moons are called prograde, orbit with Saturn's rotation. Each of these moons takes more than two years to finish a full orbit. Each one of these new moons gives evidence of how the early years of the universe were. With these discoveries, scientists have concluded that after the Big Bang happened millions of pieces of rock were being thrown around the universe and being caught in the magnetic field of different plants, as shown in the many news orbiting Saturn.
These new discoveries have led scientists such as Shepherd to believe that there may be more out in the universe than we can tell right now. With this exciting information, we can hope that maybe there is a planet similar to earth or maybe even an entire solar system that is somewhat identical to ours.

  1. That's really interesting because it shows how that even though our technology has progressed so much, there is still so much we don't know about, like space.

  2. This is a great topic to write about because I feel like everyone likes space
