All female space walk by: norah monaghan

On October 18, 2019, Jessica Meir and Christina Koch conducted a space walk outside of the international space station. This isn't just any space walk though, they are the first all female pair to conduct one! The first women to ever go on a space walk was Russian cosmonaut, Svetlana Savitskaya in 1984. 35 years later, the first all girl group went out. Only 12 U.S women have done a space walk since Savitskaya walked. It's crazy how long it has taken for an all girl group to finally go.  In a conference before their  walk, Meir said,"What we're doing now shows all the work that went in for the decades prior, all of the women that worked to get us to where we are today". Their walk shows how far women have come in past decades to gain equality, but Koch and Meir don't usually think about their roles in history, to them, they are just normal members of an efficient team. Because they don't focus on the part they've played in history, Meir said it's nice to look back and see what they've done for women's history and how far women have come. The first all women's space walk was supposed to make place back in march, just in time for women's history month. It was postponed though, due to a shortage of suits in the size the women needed. Hilary Clinton responded to the news of the postponement on twitter saying,"Make another suit". NASA made sure to get more suits in the sizes needed, so when the opportunity presented itself the women, had everything they needed to complete the task.
The walk lasted 7 hours and 7 minutes. The pair was replacing a faulty battery charge/discharge unit. The unit malfunctioned after being installed on October 11. During the space walk, the women received a call President Trump, which was the first time the president communicated with someone outside a spaceship since 1969.  There was also a media teleconference held, which, according to NASA,  was meant to discuss the significance of the walk and how NASA plans to have the first women and next man on the moon by 2024. Clearly NASA is excited about getting women to do out of this world things!

  1. This is really cool! It's about time more women start to get more involved with big things such as this.

  3. I think this is so great! I feel like there is always a subtle sense of favoritism to men in the workforce but it is so terrible
