All the Good by Sarah Bargfrede

With the topic of "Current Events", this blog will eventually be filled with stories of frustrating politics, disastrous climate change, and an overall litany of human error and fault. While I have no intention of discrediting any of these pertinent issues, it is similarly crucial to occasionally be reminded that, contrary to what we may see on every news channel and website, the world and the human race are not entirely forsaken causes simply counting the days towards death and oblivion. As a certified cynic myself (Okay, so that's not a thing but if it were I'd definitely be one), this blog post is as much for the noble student cause of upholding a grade as it is for me and my sanity.
Whether you are Jimmy Carter spending his 95th birthday building homes for humanity or one of 1,200 school children removing litter from a Belgian beach, it is clear that there are truly good human deeds happening all around us. Take for instance a teacher carrying a student with Spina Bifida on his back so she wouldn't miss out on the school field trip. Or how a school in Washington turned their lawn into a garden to help feed the poor. Or a billionaire paying off college loans of all graduating students and their parents at Morehouse college. Or a man simply connecting with others by spending thousands of hour-long conversations with strangers. I don't mean to list forever here but the sheer number of examples, whether simple or grand, is extraordinarily heartwarming.
While all these stories exude elements of happiness, love, and kindness, what a found most enlightening was the quantity in which the stories could be found; hundreds of them in the past month alone! This begs the question, how often do we overlook these acts of compassion all around us? How many times do news corporations ignore the beautifully wholesome acts of mankind and replace them with click-bait and pictures of our celebrities' latest fashion trends or relationships? Imagine a world in which these kindnesses were documented and shared in all of our news companies, a world where maybe someday, in an English classroom of the future, the blog topic of "Current Events" will not mean political debates, wars, and global warming, Maybe someday, it will mean something more, something that doesn't invoke fear or depression or cynicism, but rather faith in humanity and hope. Or, then again, maybe we are all hurtling into oblivion anyway.

  2. I love this post, Sarah. (Nice vocab by the way.) This was a really well written and, unfortunately, unique perspective. I just chose my topic (abortion... I know, yikes) and I really love how you questioned why we focus so much on the negatives in society. This focus on positivity really helps with my sanity too, so thanks. Great job!!

  8. I love that you chose to share the too-often overlooked positivity in the world. People often forget that good news can be just as important! Your post reminded me of an Instagram account I follow, @the_happy_broadcast, to get my weekly dose of good news. It's a great source for anyone else prone to overwhelm caused by the bombardment of daily negative news.
