Changing Halloween? -Alexa Acker

As we all know, for the longest time we've been celebrating Halloween on October 31st. This date originated thousands of years ago from when the Samhains believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.

Currently, there has been a new discussion asking if we should change Halloween from being on the 31st, to the last Saturday in October. A group has been recently petitioning for this date change saying that "It's time for a Safer, Longer, Stress-Free Celebration!"

Many arguments can be made for why we should officially change the date of Halloween. First of all, children are already dealing with enough stress from school and it's not fair for them to be given homework on a stress- free, fun night. Additionally, many kids show up to school tired and fatigued the next morning and can't function properly the day after a long night out. Studies from the National Sleep Foundation show that children ages 4-13 years old need around 10-11 hours of sleep each night.

With late bedtimes and early school times, this amount of sleep is not at all possible. If the date of Halloween was changed to the 26th, the last Saturday in October, all of these problems would be fixed and these hardworking kids would have the fun they deserve.

  1. I think Halloween should be changed to the last Friday of October because then kids don't have to stay at home all day and wait to go trick or treating at night. Also, it gives them the opportunity to celebrate at school.

  2. I think that Halloween should be changed to either the last Friday or Saturday of October. I think that either day could work. The benefits of having it on Friday is that kids can stay out later and not have to worry about doing homework, but still celebrate at school. The benefits of having on Saturday is that younger kids can go out earlier and no one has to worry about homework.

  3. I also think this is a great idea! It would only take a few years to get used to it and everyone would have a better day with their children.

  4. This would be such a good idea. Every year, I remember people complaining about Halloween being on a terrible day or during the week. It doesn't happen often where Halloween is on a Saturday, which would be better. Kids could have a fun holiday without worrying about school or work.
