Devastating Northern California Wildfires by Brittany Brannigan

On October 27th, winds reaching hurricane force whipped through Northern California, spreading The Kincade wildfire north of San Francisco and burning thousands of acres. The Kincade wildfire is just one prime example of the types of climate California has to deal with on a daily basis. This devastating wildfire forced 200,000 out of their homes and seriously injured a firefighter who is now in critical condition. Wind gusts reached 100 mph, which helped the fire to double in size from Sunday afternoon to Sunday evening. The Soda Rock Winery, along with many other locations in Sonoma County, were burned to the ground by this terrible wildfire tearing across California. As per the latest news, this wildfire is only at 5 percent containment.
Flames from the Kincade fire consume a home in California
It is insane how fast this fire has spread, but it is all due to the change in climate each and every day. According to NASA, the number of record high temperatures events in the United States has been increasing, while the number of record low temperature events has been decreasing, since 1950. The U.S. has also witnessed increasing numbers of intense rainfall events. Weather patterns show that our environment is, in fact, changing, whether you want to believe it or not. This tremendous wildfire is only one of the many that occur in California and other states in America, and according to NBC News, extremely low humidity was helping the fires spread.
As members of a worldwide community, we all need to find a way to contribute to the environment so it can be a safe and healthy place for everyone. If we continue to have these massive wildfires and other extreme events, the climate will continue to change until finally, we are in our 6th mass extinction. There are many things we can all do to help save our planet, starting with not using plastic straws and turning off some lights.
We'll never really understand how much the climate is changing, until one day, everything is different. This issue affects everyone, not just me. Seeing the amount of wildfires California has to face should spark a need for change because up until recently, California actually did experience rainfall. As the Sonoma County Sheriff stated, "Take care of each other." We can start by saving the environment and making it a cleaner and better place for everyone.
