Halloween Date Change by Liz Aldrich

Image result for halloweenAs of last year, a petition was formulated by Nonprofit Halloween and Costume Association. The petition states that from now on, Halloween to be on the last Saturday of October, and not for October 31, the usual date. Now, this might sound totally ridiculous and just a scheme to try and change one more thing in society but there is true method to this madness. Many people are signing this petition because most years, Halloween lands on a weeknight and many parents are far from happy about that. Most parents do not want their kids doing anything, whether it is trick or treating, to attending an annual Halloween bash, to be out late at night while they have school in the morning, but its Halloween, so they have to! With placing it on a Saturday indefinitely, this problem would be washed away. The demands also come from a place of safety. The Safe Kids Worldwide organization actually states that "twice as many kids are killed on Halloween than any other day fo the year." With Halloween being pushed to Saturday, more parents would be home from work and free to walk around with their child to make sure all is well and safe. This petition isn't just safety, and rules, it truly takes into account the wants and needs of the adults and teenagers with their nights. The petition would make sure that since it is a Saturday and not a school night, adults and teenagers have that much more time to celebrate and have fun. So far, on Monday, October 7, the petition has 149, 456 signatures of their goal, 150,000 which just keeps going up and up from date to date. In my opinion, this would be a great change and I have just signed the petition. With this petition,  I wouldn't have to wait for the weekend after to celebrate Halloween, I could celebrate it right away and have more fun. This way I could stay out late and not be worried about what homework I have to finish or going to bed early so I can get up and catch the bus the next morning. Although I think the petition is a great idea, some people are extremely against it. Many people are saying that it is unnecessary to change it because the date has always and will always be fine where it is. Many of these people see Halloween as October 31 and absolutely nothing else, which can be understandable. The tradition of Halloween has always been a fun tradition of seeing the last day, October 31 on the calendar to get excited for, but sometimes change is good, if it is for the better. But, if it's not broke, don't fix it, right? The question really is, is it broke?
