ISIS Leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is Declared Dead- Jack Maraziti

After nine intense years of searching and fighting, the most wanted man in the world, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, is declared dead after a US raid.  Baghdadi, a very devout Islamic follower, emerged in 2010 as the leader of ISIS, which is a prominent religious terrorist group.  Since then, has ISIS controlled an area of land that was equivalent in size to Great Britain, and has been launching terrorist attacks throughout the world. However, the strength of ISIS appears to be diminishing.  I have heard of many ISIS attacks on the news before and I was surprised that Baghdadi was finally killed.  This was surprising to me since Baghdadi is always on the move and has been falsely declared dead several times before.  However, DNA testing has confirmed that Baghdadi's death is the real thing, thus spiking my interest even further.

From an American viewpoint, this fact is very exciting.  But, after further research and reading, it is also terrible.  Trump has continuously been claiming on social media that this successful raid was purely an American victory.  However,  Trump has barely mentioned and has recently betrayed one of our most important allies in this matter; the Kurds.  The Kurds are a rebel group in Syria that is uprising against the government.  Previously, the United States has had an alliance with the Kurds in which we protected them from the Turkish government who considers them to be terrorists.  Furthermore, the Kurds lead the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and have fought alongside the US against ISIS.  In addition, it was the Kurdish who helped identify the exact location of Baghdadi.  However, in the weeks leading up to the assault, Trump ordered the Kurds to take down their defenses against Turkey and then left the alliance. This left the Kurds completely vulnerable.  This action delayed the raid and even had the potential to make it unsuccessful while also betraying the Kurdish people.  Yet after all the Kurds have done to help the United States, Trump is still claiming that this is a US victory.

Although ISIS took a big hit when Baghdadi was killed, they are still a dangerous threat comprised of approximately 16,000 fighters around the world.  Hopefully relations between the United States and other countries do not grow any worse, and the world can take down all of ISIS once and for all.

Baghdadi is gone, but ISIS isn't dead yet -- and could be poised for a resurgence
