Snickers Wants to Change Halloween to Benefit Sales By: Alexandra Gavioli
A recent petition came out, and is still circulating, which is pushing to make Halloween during the last weekend of October. Many parents and children were on opposite sides of the debate. Although many wonder how would this change Halloween? Snickers is a popular candy brand that will receive its greatest influx of sales during the month of October when it is time to buy candy for Halloween. As one of the bigger influencers of Halloween, the company said if the petition went through, to change Halloween, they would give away 1 million free candy bars.
Many people who supported the petition were very excited about the candy bar offer and promotion of the petition. Although other people thought it was a big scam. Why would Snickers care so much about the day of Halloween? When I found this out, I dove deeper into the petition and thought about the company's true motives. This might not have occurred to some people but its all about the increase in their profit and sales. Moving Halloween to a weekend would be a huge win to the candy company, bringing a large influx in sales. They are practically bribing people with free candy so they can sell more candy. It's a master plan, but some parents want to boycott the candy brand all together now.
Halloween on a weekend would mean all-around more participation, and therefore more sales. Children do not get home from school until 3:00. This is a big issue for many Halloween companies because children are the primary consumers of Halloween goods. The holiday being on a weekday minimizes the amount of time spent out, and the amount of money parents are spending. Juxtaposed to the new proposal of having Halloween on a weekend, which would be an all-day event. After looking past the basic facts, we can see the entire promotion of the petition was just a cash grab. I ask parents to start thinking about more than just the surface of this issue. The deeper meaning is that this petition is a business ploy for candy companies to make more sales. That should be what parents are focusing on, and how that affects how they feel about the company. The Snickers company was hoping to cover their motives with a sweet candy coating, and many parents fell for the bait.
An interesting idea!
