Thoughts on the Current Presidential Election by Elizabeth DeGasperis
Who am I to think my political opinions matter to others? To be honest, I do not and I am only writing about this topic potentially find some common ground with others. Please, let me be clear: this post is not to shame anyone with different viewpoints. You are entitled to disagree with me on anything you please. Please know, I respect you.
If you knew me before I attended Sparta High School, you would know that I had some opinions that were rather controversial, to put it lightly. I lacked the self-awareness to see how what I would say impacted others. Like many others, I grew up in a Republican, Christian, and conservative household. Naturally, I would end up in the same way. However, as a seventh-grade child in my civics class, I pretended to know everything there was to know about politics, religion, and other subjects I simply could not have had a grasp on. I had this overwhelming sense of pride in my beliefs/convictions. Filled to the brim with talking points directly from Fox News, I "supported" Donald Trump (though if you had asked me why I most likely would have stared at you blankly). Looking back, I do not demonize anyone who voted for him, originally. In my opinion, there were some (I repeat: only some) points of agreement with him: his trade policies, and his belief that the United States should not act as the world policeman on foreign policy. In addition, he vowed to protect the rights of the LGBTQ+ community and medicare/social security. However, he has repeatedly broken these promises by actively supporting the corporate elites instead of the working class, among other things. Trump has let down the people of this country. I eventually became what the right-wing likes to call a loony, Soviet or Venezuela-loving socialist. This, however, is not true either, yet quite amusing, in my opinion.
For now, I would like to focus on the 2020 Presidential Race. As of right now, there is only one candidate I am proud to support, and that is Bernie Sanders. I feel he is the only candidate who will bring about the most change in America. Policy substance, Sanders cares the most about. America needs Medicare for All, Free College, a Green New Deal, ending the wars, legalized marijuana, a tax on the wealthiest one percent, etc. It is shameful that America is the only developed country without these, quite frankly. This platform is overwhelmingly popular among Americans. The rest of the candidates only appear to care about the money they receive from doing the bidding of the corporations. Many of them claim that they support these plights, however, their voting records beg to differ. Even since the early 1970s, Sanders has been the most consistent among all of the Democratic possibilities. (Once again, I do not wish to demonize anyone with opposing viewpoints. You are all entitled to your own opinions.)

love your openness and opinions about politics. I don't wanna get anywhere close to the discussion of politics. It scares me tbh.
ReplyDeleteThis is a brave post as politics can be a hot button topic. I'm glad you were/are open to changing your views to be your own---that's what we do as we grow up, although it's not an easy thing to do!
