Why I Hate Being Creative by Georgia Paraskos

Creativity. Something that our generation has been penalized for expressing up until high school when all of a sudden adults are pleading for us to bring it back. I think it is safe to assume that everyone is born with even a little bit of creativity, (unless you like green, green is NOT a creative color) but I have noticed that as I've survived the great gift of education I struggle when a teacher gives me freedom to actually make my own choices for an assignment. They say they will reward you for your creativity, but your memory of being ridiculed after ending your fourth-grade essay with "I hope you enjoyed reading this essay" or "and then I woke up, it was just a dream" forces you to hesitate when breaking the norm in which you have learned to conform to: Only do what is required, nothing else.

Even as I got home from school at seven like I do on a normal school day (and realized that starting my English assignments due tomorrow would probably be a wise idea) I was stuck thinking about a prompt creative enough that I wouldn't get points taken away for lack of creativity. Something that would not only fit within the guidelines presented but also break the guidelines in an original way. This is something that I have heard the rest of my peers worry about as well, which I guess is comforting because I know I am no less creative than the next kid writing about something creative for their blog post at 11:43 PM the night before the due date, but also not so comforting because it proves just how blatantly boring and unimaginative our minds have become. Creativity has become so unfamiliar to us that it's exhausting and nervewracking to incorporate it into our schoolwork. I've spent nearly ten minutes trying to figure out a creative way to end this blog post, and all I really want to do is go to bed, so I'll take the risk and just end it whenever I feel like it, because that's creative, isn't it? Who gets to decide? Why can't I decide for everyone? Well, I just did. I declare this post creative and really good and definitely deserving of positive reinforcement otherwise my fourth-grade flashback will trigger and I'll never want to be creative again.

  2. I feel the same way. More freedom leads us into a sea of possibilities we get lost in. This is great :)

  3. This is hilarious! I even showed this to my sister because we relate to this so much!

  4. Your voice and humor in this piece is creative. I do, however, think you hit the nail on the head because you are so used to following specific guidelines that will ensure you get a specific grade, that being creative is scary. However, you need creativity in most jobs. Bosses want people who will do what needs to be done AND come up with better and innovative ways to do it!
