A Pet's Thanksgiving - Adam Bova

I woke up this morning and it seemed like a normal day. Except today, there were a bunch of random humans walking around my house that my people seemed to know. They all wanted to pet me, so they didn't seem threatening. My people spent the entire day cooking. There were so many smells that I could barely contain myself. I made sure to hang out in the kitchen so I could smell all of the food that was being made. Everyone seemed so much more cheerful than usual, listening to songs about boxes being under trees and the cold white stuff falling out of the sky. I just couldn't wait until all of the food was ready. Later in the day, when all of the food was set on a table, I was in heaven. I could only see on my hind legs, but from what I saw, the entire table was covered in food. There were meat and vegetables everywhere; my nose was quickly filled with all of the smells. When the humans began to eat, pieces of the giant chicken were falling all over the floor for me to lick up. I ate more food today than my people ever feed me. I only stopped when I felt like I would explode. I didn't even need to beg for it, the random humans just gave it to me and pet me. I enjoyed the attention. When everyone was done eating, all of the random baby humans chased me all over the house until I couldn't run anymore. Once all of the humans were tired, they sat down on the couch and I laid next to the fire. We all relaxed while they looked at the giant box that made pictures and sounds. Finally, I could hear all of the humans snoring. When that happened, I quietly made my way back into the kitchen and jumped up on to the table with all of the leftover food. That was a real thanksgiving dinner.

  1. I like how you described everything very simply. As if the dog was really telling the story.

  2. I like how this dog describes the friends and family as "humans," it's also funny how the dog does not mention anything about his/her owners.

  3. It's by far easy to write in the POV of a human nevermind a dog, and you did a really good job with that!
