Remember When We Were Younger? By Sarah Bargfrede
Remember when we were younger?
When our innocence made us invincible,
our youthful naivete an escape from danger
Each fear irrational, each fear foolish in the arms of a parent
Remember when our imaginations were a vessel
On which we traveled far and wide
Courageously venturing through pirate-ridden lands
Wielding sticks for swords and ridding the world of evil?
Where castles of sand become kingdoms fit for royalty
A stuffed bear with a friendly smile: lovable companion by day
And fearless protector/dragon-slayer by night
Everything enhanced, everything magical in the eyes of a child
Remember the times when we took it for granted
That safety found in childhood purity,
When dropping your ice cream was the bane of existence
Two pages of homework nothing short of catastrophe
We look back on those times and laugh
Laugh at our tantrums and whines
our “monsters under the bed”
No one told you there would be peace in the ignorance
No one told you how much you would regret
Those lost years of childhood
And what if I told you that one day in the future
we may be missing right now with the same nostalgic yearning?
That we may look upon these years and think
Remember when we were younger?
Remember those wild highschool years?
Those mistakes we made,
the insignificant consequences that followed
The friends we had and loved and lost?
Each memory overlooked, each memory now treasured in the minds of our future-selves
Wow! This is amazing and I can feel the emotion behind it. Everything we did was taken for granted and I jsut wonder sometimes if we're gonna look back on high school and feel the same way. Great job! You're such a great writer!
ReplyDeleteThis is soooo good. Sometimes I think about this type of thing and get scared that I'm running out of time as a child (legally at least), or not spending enough time having fun or just being a kid but I guess I won't know for certain until I'm 25 and think about how young and stupid I was in high school. Regardless, this poem is fantastic! I love your writing!
ReplyDeletewow this is so good Sarah!! Really missing being a kid now :(
ReplyDeletelol i like how we both wrote about nostalgia. I love the flow of this poem and it makes me miss being so carefree :( but i guess we have to grow up eventually.
ReplyDeleteThis poem was excellent and made my stomach feel sick (in a good way) because every person past a certain age things like this. It's almost a silent wish to just have a few more days as a carefree child.
ReplyDeleteThat poem is amazing! I love the transition from looking back on our early childhood to our future selves looking back on our present. This was truly perfectly written.
