School Then vs. Now By Sam Stankiewicz

Picture it; Second grade: the smell of crayons, the sound of scissors slicing through construction paper, you look up from your desk and raise your hand. You happen to be completely finished with your hand turkey! You smile as you get out of your seat and hand it to the teacher...it looks pretty bad because you are not the most artistic person, but your teacher smiles, says 'Good Job' and places it with the others on the side. After the entire class finishes, your teacher tries to make the day as fun as possible by reading a Thanksgiving story! You listen eagerly, then sit back at your desk when the book ends. You turn your head, and the Magic School Bus theme song blasts in the room, and the teacher lets you stand up and dance to Ms. Frizzle and her students traveling underwater to research plants. Later that day, you go home, throw down your backpack and sprint upstairs to read The Land of Stories: your favorite book series. You slowly fall asleep, after looking at the clock reading: 8:00pm. You have eleven hours of sleep ahead of you.
Now: You struggle to click the "SNOOZE" button on your alarm clock at 5am. You crawl out of bed, thanking God that today is only a half-day, and you have a four-day weekend coming up...just five more hours of hell...your teachers only bring up Thanksgiving when they say the words "Have a great Thanksgiving" at the end of the day. No hand turkeys, no stories, nothing. You trudge throughout the hallways, and no one smiles at you, because everyone is struggling to keep their head up too. Your chrome book runs out of battery as you sigh and glance at the clock above the door. 12pm sets the bell off, and you walk outside to your bus, earbuds in ears, and wave to a few of your friends. You get home, and throw your bag on the couch...you follow. You reach into your bag and whip out Romeo and Juliet- not a very enticing book...because you and your class read and analyzed each line three times over. You fall asleep, and pray that you don't need to get up early tomorrow.

  1. Wow! I relate to this so much it's scary. Magic School Bus used to be my jam and I miss going to bed at 8:00PM. Now school feels like a chore rather than what it used to be. Take me back!

  2. I relate to this 100%. School used to be enjoyable. I long for those days of making hand turkeys and curling up in bed at 8 to read our favorite books. Now, we rarely have time for activities we enjoy because we're stuck doing homework until 1:00am.
