"Summer" by Kavya Kamath

Guess what guys??? It's Creative Writing month!! (Woot woot!)

Guess what else it is? ... almost winter... (this I'm not as excited about.)
And what better way to commemorate the oncoming of winter than with a poem about summer? (I'm a genius, I know.)

Now, for my past two posts, I've already done some form of creative writing—a poem, a short story—but because it's Creative Writing month, I've now got a reason to go all out! So, I'm not doing any ordinary poem this time, no, no, no. "Summer" is a spoken word poem, which is basically just a poem that is made to be performed aloud.

(Here's a brilliant ted talk on it if you're interested: https://www.ted.com/talks/sarah_kay_if_i_should_have_a_daughter?language=en.)

Thus, I present to you all...

Summer - A Spoken Word Poem

Summer
A time for bad decisions
But no regrets
For the beach and the sand and oceans and tans
For copious amounts of sunblock because sunburn ain’t cute
A time for friendship and self discovery
Of long hours watching Netflix and YouTube
Well, long hours that feel shorter than a second
A time for flowers and reading under a tree in the sunlight
For selfies and silly pictures
For long bike rides with siblings, riding without holding the handlebars (...and occasionally falling off)
For ice pops and ice cream and complaining about the heat
But still loving it anyway
A time for being sweaty and gross in that cute sundress and sombrero and $2 necklace from the flea market
For string bracelets and painted toenails that chip in a day, an aesthetic all on their own so you don’t repaint them
A time for staying up until 2 in the morning texting that boy, texting that girl
And thinking you should’ve fallen asleep hours ago, but oh well, that’s tomorrow’s problem
And sleeping in ‘till noon because you stayed up so late last night
Or sleeping in ‘till noon anyways
A time for crazy, stupid, dumb, impulsive, later-deemed-a-mistake fun
A time for being young
Summer

  1. I love this poem! It truly highlights the freedom we have in summer in a way that is both intriguing and entertaining. I really enjoy how certain lines are filled with such vibrant detail that they bring the images to life. This mixed with the humor altogether makes it a fantastic piece! Great work!

  2. I love your word choice throughout this piece; it paints such a clear picture of summertime. My favorite part about this poem is how easy it is to relate to it, which really creates a connection between the author and the reader - I found myself reminiscing about my own summer experiences while reading. Amazing job(to no surprise)!
