Thanksgiving by Matt Byrnes

BANG! An innocent turkey has just been killed. That turkey was just standing around doing nothing when it got shot(just like every year). There's a turkey on our plates once a year. A few days after getting shot, it's going to be in our stomachs. Every year there are mashed potatoes and gravy with that unfortunate turkey. Stuffing is present, sometimes boxed stuffing or sometimes homemade stuffing stuffed inside that turkey. The turkey is surrounded by hot steaming vegetables. as well. From one plate to another, pieces of turkey is resting on it and then rapidly consumed into our stomach. One house by house. One town by town. One state by state. Thanksgiving is all about food in most homes. Every year, the men of the house can't wait to weigh 200 something pounds one day and 300 something pounds the very next day.
We all greet the family with the same expression. "Happy Thanksgiving." We all then ask, "How long until the turkey is finished." Everyone moves to their regular spots. Ladies to the kitchen trying to cook the meal. Men to the living room. The kids go...pretty much everywhere. "And it's a touchdown!" Football games are being played. Family members that you haven't seen in a million years are catching up with you. Kids are screaming and are running around the house. And then there's always that, "Mom! Joe is being mean" or "Dad, tell him to stop!" Ah, the classic family party. There's always fighting between the kids, even on Thanksgiving.
"DING" It's ready. Finally. The oven just rang to signify the turkey is done cooking. Everyone rushes to the table. The reason why so many people like this day is now evident like every other year. In a matter of minutes, everything is eaten. The men go back to watching football. The kids go back to screaming and running around. The women are left to converse and clean up everything. After they drink a glass of wine and hang around their husbands and siblings. Time passes and its already time for dessert. It's the best part of the day for the kids. Pumpkin pie, apple pie, cheesecake, and other sweets are put onto the table. Everyone starts to eat except after their first bite, they realize they ate too much at dinner. And so, the day ends. Families say goodbye. Everyone brings some type of leftovers home with them. Everyone's tired and in the car, kids fall asleep. Not one single person thinks about next year. It's the same thing over and over which is started with an innocent turkey getting killed.

  1. I like how you sympathized with the turkey. It was an interesting approach. Also, good parallelism.

  2. I gotta say its a pretty accurate thanksgiving. Guys watching the football games, playing football games, kids screaming, and people eating as much as they can and as fast as they can and then they get all tired and fall asleep.

  3. Your depiction of thanksgiving was extremely accurate with my family’s! But I like how you while talking about it as a whole you still could focus in on one thing— the turkey.
