The White Room by Noelle Hanek
There was some noise first. It started out as a slight, distant, murmuring that I could not comprehend whatsoever.
Everything went back to silence. Nothing.
But then, it happened again. More sound. Gradually it got louder, to the point where I could understand it was voices that I've been hearing.
Something was there. But what?
In confusion, I stirred, and moved my neck from side to side. I then felt myself in my body.
I shifted back and forth from feeling something, to absolutely nothing at all. I'm in existence, at least I know that. But what world was I in right now?
Suddenly, my eyelids lifted up. But I saw no sight. Just a blank color of gray.
I then understood. My eyes were covered up so I could not see.
The feeling of uncertainty flowed through my veins.
I stirred again.
Then I sensed a figure standing over me.
Strange things are happening, but I felt myself letting go. Once again, I drifted away. I was back in the dark. Back in silence.
Eventually, my senses were returning once again. I could hear things. I could move a little.
The contraption over my eyes was then removed.
Immediate brightness struck me. I let my eyes take in what was around me. The color white was all around. I couldn't see anything but white. But the sight startled me awake.
Then everything came to me. The entire incident, my arrival at the hospital, my final words before I went out.
Without thinking I turned my head to see what was around me. I could only make out two other people in beds with medical devices attached to them. Then I noticed, so did I. I'll be okay. Soon you'll wake up. I told them in my head.
I was surprised to hear myself speak after I was asked a few questions, I'm assuming by a nurse.
How are you feeling? Okay. Did I feel sick? Yes. My stomach hurt. Was I in pain? Nope. But that would come later I'm sure. What? More Questions? Why are you keep waking me?
I tried to keep myself awake but I closed my eyes and kept them shut. It was much easier.
But instead of the dark I was in a new place this time. Two large doors shut behind me. I was out of that room. I was outside. I could finally see colors other than white. I let the sun's warmth hit my face as I looked up to the sky. It was a beautiful day. Then suddenly, I was with my friends, and with my family. I was with the people who I missed and who meant the most to me. I was free from everything holding me back. I felt the weights being lifted from my shoulders. I possessed strength I never knew I had before. I was able to do what I wanted without anything stopping me this time. And I was no longer isolated from the people I cared about. This was my world.
The sleep was very refreshing. When my eyes reopened, I returned and let myself take in my surroundings once again. This time, I was in a different room. The sleep definitely brought me more strength, even though I was still tired. I was sitting in an upright chair. I no longer needed to lay down, I was able to sit up and communicate, at least half way decently. Regardless of everything that took place, and not knowing what time or even what day it was, here I was, sitting in this chair, sipping some water, and approaching being back to normal.
"Your parents are coming to see you now and then you can be sent home." a nurse told me.
Home. The word was so satisfying to my ears. It was time.
I looked up as my parents entered the room, all of us exhausted but at the same time we've never been more glad.
