Hip-Hop's Effect on my Life by Lucas Rendina

I've been listening to rap music for as long as I can remember, since around 5th grade. Rap is a mix between poetry and singing, usually performed quickly and rhythmically. Over the past 5 years, it has had a pretty big impact on my life. From when I'm trying to relax, work out, or stay entertained in school, I have always been listening to hip hop. I've tried to listen to other genres, usually when my older brother plays them for me, put I never liked anything as much as the rhythm and flowing lyrics of rap. The first hip hop I ever listened to was on an old Samsung tablet with my older brother's skull candy earbuds. I found an Eminem album on YouTube and 10 year old me loved it. I kept taking his earbuds because I figured I wouldn't be allowed to listen to the music and my parents wouldn't let me. Eventually I got my own pair and by the time my parents found out, I was old enough that they didn't care. Throughout middle school, I grew up on artists such as Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and Lil Wayne, and I think it positively effected me. Listening to the struggles that a lot of rappers had growing up in the projects made me appreciate everything I had a lot more. Even today, with the problems I have, I try to be grateful and think about how things could be worse. I sleep in my own bed, always have food and clothes, and never have to be in fear for my safety. This gives a more positive outlook on the annoyance of getting bad grades, when there are kids my age going hungry, getting shot, and losing their loved ones. This might seem depressing, but I think it makes me less selfish and I try to never complain because of it. Instead, I try to do something about it when I have a problem of make the best of it if I can't. Rap music does occasionally distract my focus from schoolwork and responsibilities, but it overall changed my life for the better.

  2. Especially living in Sparta, most of the time we are surrounded by privilege and we hear it all the time. Even in our area there are so many people less fortunate than we are and it's usually not a thought that crosses our minds. Finding a way to ground yourself is soo important and it's really good that you found such an amazing way to do it.
