My Favorite Book So Far: Joe Byrnes
So far, this year, we have gone through a couple of units in class. Our first unit was all about structure and characterization. The second unit focused on the Hero Journey and Archetypes. Our third unit was Sophocles, the Greek Theater, creative expository writing, social injustice, and finding the truth. Throughout each of these units, we had to read a book, that related to that specific unit.
In unit one, I read two books: Zero Day and All American Boys. This unit was all about structure and characterization. All American Boys has a very unique structure. The perspective changes from two boys in the same community. One boy is black, Rashad, and the other is white, Quinn. Rashad is abused by a police officer and Quinn is there to witness it. The alternating perspectives throughout the entire book allows the reader to see how two different people deal with what happened. Zero Day has an interesting structure too. It is told from the third person, but the main character, Addie, gets flashbacks to when she was younger. This book is about the president's daughter who was kidnapped but then resurfaced eight years later. However, there is suspicion that she might have a connection with the recent cyber attacks by the group Cyberus.
In unit two, I read one book: The Ledge. This is a true story about two best friends who loved to climb and be outdoors. One climb they were trying to reach Liberty Ridge, their dream. On their descent, something tragic happens. They fall into a crevasse and aren't able to stop themselves. They keep falling and falling until they hit the ground. Unfortunately, only one of them survived. This book relates to this unit because this unit is all about the Hero Journey. The man who survived is not just a hero for climbing to Liberty Ridge and surviving a fall in a crevasse. His whole entire journey, from his first steps on the mountain to being in the crevasse, to climbing out of the crevasse, to getting rescued, is what makes him a hero.
In unit three, I also read one book: The Hate U Give. This book was about a character named Starr who witnessed her friend Kahlil get shot and killed by a police officer. Starr is a part of two different worlds. One is where she lives. It is predominantly black. The other is where she goes to school. It is predominantly white. These two communities have different views on the situation with Kahlil, and both communities influence what choices Starr makes. This book relates to this unit because social injustice and finding the truth were apart of this unit. Social injustice is present in The Hate U Give because it is all about police brutality. Finding the truth is also in the book because Starr is trying to find out the truth about Kahlil and why he was shot.
Overall, I have read four outstanding books and I have enjoyed each and every one of them. However, I do have a favorite. My favorite so far has to be The Hate U Give. I loved how the book was written and how the story went. I think that without doing what we did in each of these units, I would have never read some of these books.

I'm glad you were able to read something you may not have picked up before!
