My phone- Connor Ailara

In class we read two articles about the benefits of taking a break from using your phone.  These articles pointed to phones effects on people's social lives, mental ability, and sleep.  They both supported disconnecting from our cell phones for at least 24 hours.
On the contrary, I believe that cell phones play a crucial role in our lives.  I unlike most of my peers had to wait until eighth grade to get a flip phone.  In middle school I found a cell phone was not necessary.  However, in ninth grade the story was very different.  Without a smart phone I was put at a major disadvantage.  Since I didn't have the ability to check my email on my phone I would often find my teachers frustrated with their inability to reach out to me.  Too often I found myself learning of tests the day of from friends who had received an email from the teacher.  Similarly, I would find out that the test was moved by the teacher through an email.  This was crippling last year and lead to my grades to be lower than they should have been.  Also, without my smartphone my parents would know my grades before me, which wasn't as impactful but was still irritating.  Some days I would come home to be scolded by my parent for getting a lower grade than was expected.  For these reasons now that I have a smartphone I am constantly checking my grades and email to make sure I am not surprised by anything.  I believe that people should not separate themselves from their phones for 24 hours but rather work to not be addicted to social media or games.  People should only use their phones as a tool, since it is needed to succeed in today's society.

  1. I agree. It would be more beneficial to just limit the use of smartphones rather than completely turning them off.

  2. I absolutely would hate not being able to know my grades. and though i do agree with your point that phone use would be better limited, it's the easiest way to find entertainment. I say, let them have their fun! :)

  3. This is so true! I think that using your phone is not a bad thing as long as you're not wasting your time on it!
