On one of the last days before winter break, we talked about what life would be like without a phone. Mrs. Kopp asked a few of us how much we use our phone per day. We went into screen time and my average was over five hours per day. That's a crazy amount of time spent on my phone! I don't think I realized I'm on my phone that much.
Mrs. Kopp then asked us what would we do if we didn't have a phone or electronics for a day. I had a really hard time thinking about what I would do. I would probably play some board games with my family, like a three-hour game of Monopoly or Scrabble, but I would only read if it were homework. If it had just snowed, I would go outside and play in the snow or I would go skiing. If it were during the summer, I would go for a bike ride, walk to town, or go to the pool with my friends. Thinking back to when I didn't have a phone, I did a lot more activities with my family and outside. During the summer before I had a phone, I would stay at the Lake Mohawk pool all day almost every day, swimming or playing in the field or making rubber band bracelets. There were people there all the time. I was younger then and my mom didn't work in the summers like she has for the last few years. Now during the summer, all I do is sit around inside and play Xbox. Though this summer, I will probably have a job.
Cell phones have also changed how we communicate. Nowadays, if I want to hang out with friends, I text or call them directly. I don't have to call a house phone and wait for someone to pick up or for an answering machine. If you had no cell phone, though, access to people wouldn't be the same. You would have no way of talking to people directly or immediately. The only way you would hang out if they didn't answer or have a landline is if you just went to their house and asked them on the spot. In this day and age, a phone is important to have, but we use it way too much for other activities like games or watching videos. We have to make a conscious effort sometimes to have real conversations.

  1. You're right - we really have to make an effort to make connections with people because the phones get in the way! Please email me because this has no name.
