Pickup Basketball: Michael Burns
Weather after school or after work, many people's favorite pastime is to play basketball. Not many things are better than going to your local basketball court with your friends and playing basketball. After playing many games of pick-up basketball, I have realized that there are many different types of players. Many players I have encountered can be very good, and not so good. Lets focus on the not so good players. These players fall into the following categories: tall guys that shoot threes, Mr. Accessories, and the "my bad" guy.
I have come to know a lot of tall basketball players, but I can't seem to understand why many of them always choose to shoot threes. Why would they want to shoot from far away when they can just dunk or go for an easy layup? These guys tend to be over six feet tall, they can just run through all of the short players. Tall players should not be behind the three point line, instead they should be around the paint looking for easy points. It is always frustrating watching tall players miss three pointers because they should not be taking them.
Many times when you go to your local basketball court, you will often see a Mr. Accessories. A Mr. Accessories is a player who is covered in sports gear such as headbands and shooting sleeves. These players go all out to make it known that they play basketball. It is always odd seeing players wearing shooting sleeves on both arms because they it is only supposed to be worn on one arm. These players often don't understand what these accessories are for and they wear too many of them. Also, its just a pickup game of basketball, not the NBA.
When you play pickup basketball, you will almost always come across the "My Bad" guy. These guys happen to be very annoying because after every mistake, they always apologize by saying the same thing over and over again. Numerous times I have had a player on my team make a mistake and say to me, "my bad."
How does this relate to what we have done in class?
This relates to what we have done in class because during this past unit, we have learned how to right classification essays. For this assignment I decided to do another one about basketball.

I like your categories!
ReplyDeleteThis made me chuckle. Personally, I don't play pickup basketball but from playing softball at the turf field NEXT TO the local basketball court, I know what you're talking about. I always find it hilarious when Mr. Accessories shows--you just know that guy is more talk than walk. Usually he isn't good at basketball AT ALL and it makes watching even better.
ReplyDeleteI totally know what you mean about Mr. Accessories. Also, I liked the categories you chose.
ReplyDeleteI like the categories you chose, mostly because I've seen all three of these players on the court before. The "my bad" guy is the worst, not gonna lie, although Mr. Accessories is pretty annoying as well. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I don't play pickup basketball very often, I have also noticed players that fit in all of these categories. The way you described these players was perfect and the classifications were perfect, so I could already guess what these players would be like. Good job!
ReplyDeleteThe way you related your blog to what we have done in class is legendary.
