The Books I've Read This Year By Shaelin Murphy

So far this year, we've completed three units and I've enjoyed the books I've read for each one. I'm glad there are categories for the books we have to read because it's gotten me to read books that I never would have read before.

In unit one, we studied author’s structure and we had to compare the structure of our summer book to the structure of the book we chose. For this unit, I chose to read The Pact by Jodi Picoult and I loved it! This book was one of the books that Mrs. Kopp recommended in class and it was about two teenagers who are dating and the girl is killed, and the boy is the prime suspect, but he claims that they had discussed a suicide pact and he backed out at the last second. This book was really interesting, and it had alternating narrators so you could see the story from several perspectives which was especially interesting because it involved someone being accused of murder. The ending of the book was really shocking and interesting… I definitely recommend it. This was definitely my favorite book that I’ve read this year.

In unit two, we studied the hero's journey. I found it really interesting and I was able to relate it to many stories that I’ve heard over the years. For that unit, I chose to read  The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. I read more than half of the book but I did not find it interesting at all. I was also really confused about what was happening, so I decided to switch books. The second book I chose was Throne of Glass by Sarah Maas. I enjoyed this book a lot more. It is about an assassin who was selected by a king to compete against other criminals to become the king’s personal assassin. The idea of the king using a criminal to protect him was interesting and the book was well written. This book is part of a series and I went on to read the next books in the series.

For our most recent unit, we studied finding the truth and social justice. For this unit, I chose to read House Rules by Jodi Picoult. After enjoying The Pact in unit one, I decided to try another book by the same author. This book was about a boy with Aspergers and his social skills tutor. The social skills tutor was murdered, and the boy, Jacob, became the prime suspect. Similar to The Pact, this book had alternating narrators. I like this because you get to see opposite opinions and perspectives of the same event. I thought that this book was very unique and I had never read another book like it. The only thing that I did not like about the book was the ending, I thought that the story was not summed up and the ending just wasn’t complete. The whole book was about trying to figure something out, but it wasn’t actually figured out. Overall, the book was good and I recommend it.

  1. I'm so glad you loved the books you chose and I'm happy you gave The Handmaid's Tale a try and were able to put it down if you wanted. That's what reading is supposed to be like!
