Things I do without my phone by Katie Groome

During class we discussed what we would do if we didn't have our phones for 24 hours. In that time, I realized that I could only come up with a small amount of things I would spend my time on without my phone and other internet. With that in mind, I decided to make a longer list of things to do with my time that didn't involve my phone, especially since it is the break and I have so much more free time.

Here are some of the things I thought of and did without my phone:

1. Painting. Yesterday I went into the depths of what my family calls our "craft closet" and found a bunch of old watercolor and acrylic paints, along with a few paintbrushes. I can't really paint so my paintings all looked like big blobs of nothing, but I ended up spending almost my entire day painting, and I even got my sister to paint with me for a little while.

2. Cooking. I bake once and a while, or if I'm feeling fancy I'll make french toast or pancakes for breakfast. However, I realized that I never really cook dinner or nice meals. I asked my mom to teach me to cook meals we have for dinner, and so far I am able to make stir fry, fried rice and lasagna. I'm definitely not the best chef but I do enjoy cooking more now so than ever because I can actually make real meals.

3. Playing instruments. In the past, I have learned to play the piano, guitar and ukulele. Despite this, I don't spend a lot of time practing or just learning new songs for fun. Before break, I began to play new piano music, and now with so much time on my hands I have been playing even more. Even though it hasn't been a while, I'm already enjoying the piano more being able to play a little better every time I sit down to practice.

These are just a few of the things I have started to focus on more on in my life without my phone, but there are definitely so many more that I would like to start. Obviously, I'm still on my phone every day, but doing these things are shifting my attention from technology and into the real world, allowing me to experience things I would miss out on if I were to just sit on my phone all day long.

  1. I would also paint and bake if I didn't have my phone. One day, I definitely want to try to unplug for at least 24 hours to see what life would be like.

  2. I love this! It's interesting to think what hobbies we can master or try if we were on our phones less.
