Chris Rock Writes Saw IX??? by Jordyn White
As many of you may know, I have a little bit of an obsession with Saw, the blockbuster slasher-franchise. I founded the basis of this interest in 2018 when the latest complete addition, Jigsaw (which, by the way, ranks number three on my list even though it doesn't have the feel of the original movies) was added on Hulu. It was an instant click. The issue with many movies that are categorized as "slasher" is the focus on blood rather than plot--just see any of the Halloween movies, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Jeepers Creepers III, Psycho, the Chucky movies, or many other dishonorable mentions.
The thing with Saw is that it has a plot and realistic characters. It centers around morality and redemption--things the other movies lack as a topic. At the risk of sounding like a total psycho, when I first watched Saw I sympathized with John Kramer (the man, the myth, the killer). Poor guy's colon cancer was diagnosed too late and became untreatable (his doctor was a player in Saw I). He wanted to teach people to not take life for granted and that if they did it would be taken from them. A twisted version of YOLO, if you will. But wait, isn't this supposed to be a current event blog? Yes, my dear reader. Yes, it is.
So how, exactly is Saw relevant? Well for one there's a new one coming out! I know that we're not all horror movie junkies like me but this is BIG. Saw began as a short film by two college kids in 2004, then evolved to a movie with the same title later that year. From 2004-2010 then again in 2017, a new movie was released on Halloween. This movie, the ninth installment, is going to be released on May15th as to not compete with the upcoming Halloween Kills movie. The movie was to be originally titled "The Organ Donor," but remains untitled until later notice.
This new movie is supposed to serve as a reboot of the franchise and may not follow the events occurring in the previous movies. As for what to expect, no one really knows. Although there has been no official trailer released, we do know that the movie was written and proposed by Chris Rock. Yes, you heard me. Comedian and actor Chris Rock is taking on the horror-narrative that could potentially make or break the franchise. He is also to star in the movie as a character named Zeke, who is a detective as confirmed by various sources. The confirmed cast includes only four names--and big ones at that.
All four of the aforementioned cast members are listed as starring. Samuel L. Jackson is playing a character Marcus (Zeke's father), Max Minghella is playing William Schenk (Zeke's partner), and Marisol Nichols is Captain Angie Garza (Zeke's boss). There have been rumors as to who else is starring but none of my sources can agree on that. Needless to say, Saw 9 has some big shoes to fill. It is featured on both Cosmopolitan's and Men's Health's lists of most anticipated horror movies in 2020. That's all we know for now, but with the impending release date lurking ever so forward something's gotta give. All we can do is sit back and rewatch the entire DVD collection in hopes of some new development. PS I totally have the entire franchise if anyone wants to watch them with me. I'm just kidding.... unless....

As much as I don't like this movie, I loved your post about it. I could really here your voice throughout the whole piece and how passionate you are about these movies. I also learned that two college kids built this story, and later it was turned into a big movie (learn something new everyday).
ReplyDeleteThese movies were so big when they came out and we loved them even though they made us sick! I wonder what the next one will be like?
ReplyDeleteWow Jordyn, I may not be the horror fanatic you are but even I can agree that the Saw movie I watched (even though I only watched due to peer pressure) was really good. With notable actors and an incredibly popular franchise, I can't imagine this movie being anything but a success. Enjoy dude and great post!
