Being Sick Stinks- by Sam Stankiewicz

We all dread being sick. In fact, I am right now. The changed diet, symptoms of an illness you don't even know about...it stinks! It's also not fair and sometimes I wonder, 'Why me?!' because who wants to be lazy all day?!! (Ok kind of me, but not like this).
Being sick obviously puts a strain on your body and how you are physically. For example, I have chills, a high fever, dizziness, nausea, coughs...the whole nine yards. It makes me feel tired and helpless, like I can't do anything but roll around in my bed and cough into the air above me. So many people have suggested curling up, eating, and watching Netflix. Really?!! Staring at a screen for a long period of time DOESN'T make your eyes water and make you dizzy and dehydrated? I guess we are very different after all and you are extremely lucky. Plus, I am a person who works out pretty often, and because of my muscles being weak and not being able to concentrate on anything but trying not to cough, I can't work out. I missed training today because I could barely move!
Say 'bye bye' to your social life when you're sick!! I mean...obviously, right? It would be considerate to stay away from people, and it WOULD be the right thing to do. But, whenever you are sick, there always seems to be something going on socially. Whether it be a family function or a birthday party, you are forced to say 'no' and roll your eyes in frustration because you're sick! It's super annoying.  Even if you went, you would probably have to take a lot of meds and you would still be drained afterwards. So, yeah I'd have to say your social life falls into a black hole during this week or so of being ill.
Under three layers of pajamas, a robe, fuzzy socks, and twelve blankets, you are sweating. But, if you budge at all, even to a slightly colder part of your bed, you feel like someone made you take an ice bath. We are all familiar with chills, and the whole idea of being really really cold in a warm or hot place. Relating back to me, yesterday I took a bath (yeah, I never take baths but I made an exception) and the water was supposed to be steaming hot. I mean, there was even steam coming off of the water. Now, was it hot to my body? No, it was only mildly warm. The next day, I did the same thing, except I didn't have chills and my body temperature was normal...I almost burned to a crisp because the water felt so blistering hot. Being sick messes with your temperatures and plays tricks and illusions with your mind that don't really help.
Hopefully, you aren't so sick that you need to miss school. Missing school is seriously a dangerous thing, especially in high school. It really sounds great short term, until you miss 4 new lessons and 2 tests. If you skip school to recover mentally and physically, then you better prepare to be buried in double the work for the next week (I'm still making up work from last week and I was only out for 2 days!)!! The lessons don't slow down for you, and it's a race to catch up in work, it's a sink or swim situation.
Finally, everyone's been through the whole 'changing your diet' thing. When you are sick, you are either nauseous, or just nothing tastes the same 'cause you don't feel well. Everything turns your stomach and makes you feel worse than before. So, this results in you whipping out crackers, bread, honey, and tea bags for the next week. Nothing is better than a big cup of tea, but after a while it gets annoying eating the same four things constantly.
You never seem to appreciate your cleared sinuses or tolerable stomach until they start acting up. Getting sick is truly dreadful and temporarily ruins your life.

  3. I totally feel this! I've been sick TWICE this year already and I've about had it with all the germs. Usually I have a good immune system and fight off the common cold in two days, but my last sickness lasted an entire week--not fun! It really sucks like can't everyone just keep their germs to themselves!?!?!?! Anyway, hope you've been feeling better!

  6. I hate being sick too! Not because the sickness itself is ever really that bad (I'm guess I'm lucky because I have absolutely no problem watching Netflix and drinking tea all day), but because of the missed schoolwork. Even when I'm not sick, I feel like I can barely keep up, but then having to do twice the amount of work before I've even recovered, but am well enough to go to school without feeling like death itself? Goodbye sleep. I totally understand where you're coming from with that and the missed schoolwork is the only reason I don't take a day off every now and then.

  7. I feel like if you miss one day of high school, you basically miss an entire month's worth of work (obviously I am exaggerating but you get my point). Being sick stinks and I am so fortunate that I haven't been sick yet. Good blog!

  8. Being sick sucks especially during school days cause when you miss just one day it can feel like forever until you are all caught up with your work.
