BrOoMs cAn StAnd oN THeiR oWn?!?!!! -Paige De Giovanni

On February 10th, a fake claim by NASA took the internet by storm, saying that for one day only, broomsticks would be able to stand up on their own.

Rumor spread that because of the "Earth's gravitational pull due to the spring equinox," broomsticks would be able to stand on their own for one day, February 10th.

While laying in bed on my phone, I came across this challenge. Every other video on my For You Page, people's private stories, and thousands of tweets deeming this the #BroomChallenge (🙄), I decided to try this myself. I was honestly fascinated. I had never seen or thought about the idea of brooms being able to stand up on their own.

At an unreasonable hour I got out of bed, searched my house for my broomstick, and in my pitch-black kitchen, my broomstick stood on its own and I was sadly fascinated. Something in the back of my brain told me this wasn't true and that NASA wouldn't make a statement this stupid, but I still fell for the hoax, likely due to how out of it I was (I'm definitely just a clown). I took pictures and videos of my broom and went back to bed, just like all the other clowns on social media.

Even while writing this today, people are still trying to stand their brooms up on their own. Some even still believe that Earth's gravitational pull during the spring equinox that's in March is the reason why their broom can stand, even though fact-checkers and every website on the first page of Google say this claim is false.

In conclusion, I'm a clown along with everyone that doesn't at least make the slightest attempt to try and fact check the information they hear on the internet.

Also, I need more brooms to make a stand on their own. Even though that's literally just their center of gravity, it's still a satisfying thing to do.

  4. When I heard about this at school I was so excited, and so when I went home to tell my parents this they said it wasn't true and I was so sad. I didn't even have a broom to try this with which made me even more sad.
