Coronavirus by Lucas Rendina
Right now, as I’m sure you know, everyone is freaking out about coronavirus. There has been a worldwide panic that has stretched from China, throughout Europe, and into America. People of all ages everywhere are afraid of the incurable virus, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warning the country of a "community spread." However, a lot of the worry going around seems to be unnecessary. The main reason for all the fear is because of the speed that it spread, not because of the severity of the disease. Of the 84,173 cases of coronavirus, 2,876 have been deaths and 36,880 people have recovered(as of February 28). This would mean it has about a 3.4% death rate, and the majority of these deaths have been older people. The mortality rate is 14.8% for people over 80 and only 0.2% for people 10-39. Therefore, any students have very little to worry about. Even given these statistics, the vast majority of all these cases and deaths have taken place in China, far from here. Over 93% of the coronavirus cases and 96% of the coronavirus deaths have come from China. While there have been 62 cases in the USA and some will possibly result in death, this doesn’t call for the reaction everyone is having. There was a similar panic 5 years ago with the Ebola virus, and many comparisons are being made between the two. However, the two are very different, and coronavirus can hardly compare to the impact ebola or the flu have. For comparison, the Ebola virus had a fatality rate of up to 90%, and the flu has killed at least 12,000 people since October. While we don’t have to worry about either of these diseases, they provide perspective as to how insignificant coronavirus has been so far. Not to say it will have no impact on America, but most people here will probably be fine, especially if they are under 40.
I heard that the Coronavirus has been around for a few years and people are only talking about it now. I think it kind of became the new obsession for news stories and the stats seemed scary enough when looking at them without considering how many people die from the regular flu all the time. I was kind of surprised by the crazy reactions people were having about the virus. Now I think it's become more of a meme than anything else but it's still misunderstood by a lot of people.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it's a concern, I think the media has hyped it up quite a bit. They are telling people to stock up on food and medicine.
