High school Expectation vs Reality By: Olivia Ekeland

This infamous 6-letter-word is constantly on my mind 24/7. I wish I can drive to school. I want to go back to elementary school. When I was in elementary school, I was so excited for high school (mainly after watching Highschool Musical a million times). But the reality is, I want to go back to elementary school so much because those days were not stressful at all. But anyhoo, these are some expectations and realities that hopefully are pretty relatable for most people:
Expectations:
  1. Waking up after getting 8-9 hours of sleep with a huge, genuine smile plastered on our faces. 
  2. Having that high school sweetheart that you go with to homecoming, formal, and prom (and maybe pull a Gabriella and Troy and sing a duet). You guys are also the cutest/cringest couple and you guys are living in a fairy tale with a perfect happily ever after.
  3. Going home after a long day of learning and taking a well-deserved nap, without waking up stressed about the amount of homework that you have
  4. Not procrastinating
  5. Knowing what college you want to go to and what you want to be when you are older
  6. Sports and after-school activities do not affect the amount of sleep a highschooler gets
Realities:
  1. Waking up after getting 3-4 hours of sleep 
  2. Possibly not even dating in high school and having to watch all of the couples make out in the hallways 
  3. Going home after a long day and waking up from a nap, stressed about the amount of homework you have 
  4. Procrastinating (pretty self-explanatory)
  5. Possibly having no idea where you want to go and/or what you want to do (This is not bad at all, in fact, if you need reassurance, I suggest you check out Sarah Bargfrede’s blog)
  6. Getting little sleep because practice ran late and you have to finish your homework

Obviously, there are more comparisons than what I have listed but I just chose the 6 popular ones. Overall, I think it is safe to say that high school is nothing like we expected it to be.

          When I contemplate what is most important in my life, my mind is drawn to my 21-year-old brother, Tom. There are not enough words in the English language I could use to describe what he means to me. I cannot imagine the past fifteen years of my life without him. Allow me to start from the beginning.           Even when I was an infant, he never failed to take me out of my crib, strap me in my high chair, and cook scrambled eggs for us (at the tender age of six). Not Fate, Just a Coincidence - Sila Paniker

The idea of fate confuses me. I don't really understand how something will happen no matter what you do. It just seems very unlikely. I think we're constantly making choices that lead to occurrences. We make so many decisions a day that it seems impossible that fate can find a way around it all.  Awhile ago, I saw something called the Butterfly Effect, which doesn't exactly relate to fate but it makes sense to me. The idea is that a butterfly flapping its wings can cause a tornado on the other side of the world. Essentially, small changes can have large impacts. In my head, this connects with the thousands of tiny decisions we subconsciously make each day. There are people I've met or things that have happened and it feels like it was meant to be but they're just a bunch of coincidences that had the ability to change everything.
