The Astros: Winners of Cheaters? - Adam Bova

If you look at the latest sports news, you will most likely see the headlines that the Houston Astros were recently caught for cheating in the 2017 World Series. The organization was caught using technology to steal the pitch sign and then relaying that information to the batter. It has never been against the rules to steal the signs of the other team, but using technology to do so is the problem. A camera in the Astros' home stadium relayed a video of the catcher's signs to a monitor in the dugout. A player watching the monitor banged a trash can to inform the batter of the type of pitch he should expect.

Since the cheating was discovered, the question of consequences remains. Many people argue that it's too late to take action and that we should just move on. Others believe that the Astros should be completely stripped of the World Series title. Unfortunately, there doesn't yet seem to be a "correct" answer to this problem.

The people who believe that nothing should be done argue that stripping the World Series title would make the rest of the season seem worthless. For all the teams in Major League Baseball to play a 162-game season and come out of it with no winner would be a waste. Furthermore, other types of cheating occurs with no ramifications. Countless teams have won championships with players using steroids which is against the rules. Therefore, many argue that if you stripped the Astros of the World Series title, we would have to strip the title from countless other teams. People on this side of the debate simply think that there isn't a viable solution to the issue faced by Major League Baseball.

On the other hand, there are those who believe that stripping the Astros of their World Series title is a viable solution. We know that they cheated so why would we reward them? They blatantly broke the rules of baseball and consequences are in order! There are certainly arguments to be made on both sides, but neither claim is perfect.

Personally, I have no clue what the MLB should do to the Astros. Part of me believes that cheating in the World Series must not go unpunished! However, there are 2,430 total games played in a Major League Baseball season. 2,430! If the Astros are stripped of their title, all of those games would've been for nothing. The 30 major league baseball teams spent an entire season working toward this one goal, and it would seem a waste if there is no World Series Champion. Unfortunately, finding a solution that satisfies both sides of the argument seems unlikely. Perhaps the tarnished reputation that the Astros now endure will be consequence enough.

  1. When are professional sports teams going to stop cheating? Such a bad image to convey to younger kids who love sports!
