The Paradox of Stress - Cole Anderson
The school year is long. It can seem like the summer takes forever to approach and when it does it doesn't last long enough. A lot of people don't mind school or the constant work and stress it can entail, but that is not how I feel. I think that working hard in school is a good thing and obviously should be praised, however, it can be a lot sometimes. I often feel like I don't want to work anymore and I can't keep waking up at 6 a.m. everyday just to sit in school for hours then go home just to do more work. I don't even have many extracurriculars and I can feel so burdened and unmotivated almost every day. I don't know if this is normal for a lot of people, but I do think many feel this way. To get to my point, I try to have good attendance, but sometimes I just need a break. I have several upcoming trips planned that should be exciting. But, during these "vacations," I know I will be thinking about all the work I am missing and will have to make up. This might sound overdramatic to you, but when can we get a break? The other thing about taking time off is the stress of attendance. I have several absences and with these trips I am going to be cutting it pretty close with the allowed absences I have. Yet, I still feel like I am always at school being mentally drained. It seems as though there is a paradox in the school system where working hard hurts your mental health, but any time off from school is still full of stress. In other words, taking time off to better yourself is ineffective since it can come at the cost of all the work you have put in which led to the stress in the first place. It really confuses me and I'm sure it confuses you as you read this.
This chart depicts what causes high school students stress the most. School and homework is the largest section and another big category is being at school. This tells me a lot about how most high school kids feel about stress (that it comes from school). However, look at all the other categories; there are so many factors outside of school that can cause a great deal of stress for students. So, students are stressed about a LOT in their lives and school just doubles that (IN MY OPINION). I don't really know a solution to any of this, so this is basically just a rant and I apologize for that, but I guess I said what needed to be said.
It's so unfortunate the amount of stress on high school students today.
