Why Winter Sucked By Paxton Hilgendorff

This winter "snowed" us and not with snow. The only real snow we had wasn't even in winter. Those four days when we were out of school were in the fall, before winter even started. I was really excited about and was looking forward to this winter, but ultimately, I have been really disappointed. I was happy because last spring my mom got me a season's pass to Mountain Creek. Two of my friends did, too. We figured we would go there every week, get some good runs in, and then hang out a little afterward when we were tired and maybe get some food. However, I have only gone skiing three times this winter at Mountain Creek and a few of the days the conditions were not very good. I don't particularly like skiing on ice or dirt for that matter. The only good skiing I did this winter was when I went up to Mount Snow in Vermont. The first day I was there, there was not much snow and it was ridiculously crowded. The second day, though, it had snowed four inches overnight. I got there right as the lifts opened, so I got some of the first runs on freshly groomed corduroy. That was the best skiing I had this year -- fresh snow on a sunny day.

Also this winter, we have had no snow days. We used up all of our snow days in one autumn week. Sometimes, all I want is just a day off from school, just a little reprieve, to go ski or even play outside in the snow. But that hasn't happened this year which is annoying. Unless it gets really cold in March and starts to snow, I would rather just have spring now. I'm really hoping that it snows a little bit in March, but based on the weather so far, it probably won't. My dad thinks climate change has made the seasons shift one month. I think it's definitely more than that. When I was little, we used to get snowstorms in Sussex County, big ones that walled us in. We certainly don't get that anymore. Climate change is ruining winter. So, bring on spring.

  1. I liked reading your blog and I agree that winter has been very boring this year because aside from that one huge snowstorm we haven't really had anything and it is annoying. Good job.

  2. Agree- this didn't even feel like winter. Maybe we'll get one snowstorm in March. We can only hope.

  3. I agree - at least they haven't had to take days away from Spring Break or Summer, though (knock on wood).
