A Civil Rights Hero By Sam Stankiewicz
Joseph Lowery was a civil rights leader who fought with Martin Luther King Jr. decades ago. He worked toward the goal to completely end segregation, and wished to see the first black president take office. Under the Obama Administration, he received the Presidential Freedom of Honor -the highest civilization honor- in 2009. As we all know, Martin Luther King Jr. battled to end racial separation, and Lowery was at his side praising equality and the idea of ending racism in America. Lowery was a Reverend in Alabama, so he liked to spread his words through scripture and preached through readings. Unfortunately, he passed away at 98 years old in his house on Friday, from old age.
Why should we care? Joseph Lowery spent his life making it his mission to fight for minority rights. I have not heard his name ever except right now, talking about his death. We as American people recognize MLK Jr., but not Joseph Lowery. A man who practiced what he preached in the '60's did what most people did not do; stand up and talk about what they believed in and what was morally right.
In today's reality, there is much less racism than back then. As we all know, we ended the segregated bathrooms, water fountains, etc. And even though there are some debates on opportunity and wage gaps, overall I think everyone has a fair chance to make their own living in America, and no matter your race we can all live the American dream. Minorities are ordinary people and individuals that live their lives like anyone else, unlike back then when white people were known to be superior. As a country we moved passed that lower part of American society, and now we are all accepting, which makes the United States that much better than it already is!
